The ABC has a story on shifting ground in the pay dispute between the ACT Government and its public service.

The Government is now offering a 2.5 per cent wage increase from July 1 as part of a one year agreement.

It is also offering a sign-on bonus of $650 for eligible employees.

Apparently the union thinks this is agreeable.

UPDATE: A chiefly media release on the new offer is now online:

“This offer is subject to the unions and other bargaining representatives agreeing to:
1) Withdraw all current claims with a net financial cost;
2) Not make any new claims with a net financial cost to the ACT Public Service;
3) Accept any recommendations by Fair Work Australia in regard to the adoption of the Government’s employment harmonisation proposals; and
4) Not pursue any course of industrial action.”

I’m alarmed that everyone seems to be embracing this offer. Stanhope and his PS chiefs must be buckling over with laughter that the unions are endorsing an offer that increases the earlier offer by just 0.25% but defers that increase for 3 months beyodn what had been agreed and (here’s the catch), in the process, also defers futures “annual” increases by 3 months. The trade off for accepting this and future inccreases in July and not April is $650!!! Do the maths. By next May, just about everyone will be worse off and all there is left to do is to bargain for another increase.

Can you trust your union??

Look on the bright side – pubes will get to pay less tax.

Eligible employee? I would think all employees should be eligible.
What happens if Fair Work Australia decide the Government is wrong, will chief nohope accept all recommendations too?

He is also trying to escape from his lack of negotiations for the last 6 months and penalising staff by not paying backpay to 1 April when the last agreement expired. A $650 payment doesn’t impress me, most of it will be lost to tax and is the equivalent to getting a a 10c bonus for spending $10.

$650 sign-on bonus for “eligible employees”? Dollars to donuts they find a way to rule (almost) everyone ineligible.

surely this is still less than inflation – wasn’t that the Union argument against the offer???

“How about 4.75% over two years?”
“No way!”
“How about 2.5% and $650?”
“Score!”
“Really? Because if you run the numbers…”
“What? I couldn’t hear you over my new iPad.”

$650? score!
