According to ABC Radio 666AM this morning, the ACT government is allocating $300,000 to prop up Summernats. This comes amid school closures, the Griffith Library closure, and paid hospital parking.

Still, luckily the arboretum and the statue of Al Grasby will still go ahead.

What a waste…

I’d expect nothing less from the Chief Numpty.

I quite like dull and quiet.
QLD is going to eat me alive!

Brendan Smyth is quoted in the CT article as saying “Summernats is great for Canberra. It breaks the stereotyped view that we’re a city full of public servants, that we’re too dull and quiet.”

Pity they couldn’t have seen the same logic for the V8 race.

only if the retarded morris dancers are forming a support group to improve the social inclusion of indigenous gay whales.

Like some of the barebreasted ladies who attend, this event needs some support.

Chic Henry has been known to be loose with the truth when it comes to matters that suit himself, Summernats, and no-one else

I hope that this is a ‘one off’ thing as it appears to be. From the article I get the impression that this is ‘merely’ due to a slump caused by external events. If that’s the case, it seems a sensible move.

If, however, numbers are declining (and I’m quite willing to wait for this year’s figures to find out) then propping it up isn’t a good idea.

Obviously no-one is likely to know the truth until after the event.

I do get nervous around the various figures flung around about how much money it brings in for the Territory, and how many jobs and so on. Because these estimates are always tossed around, even in the cases where the whole thing falls apart. I’m curious to know if the net balance is in our favour.

Only curious, because I don’t really care if Summernats stays or goes.

In the case of the ‘nats (though it’s not my thing) I’d say you’ve gotta spend money to make money. I can’t back up this arguement with figures, but I’d say propping it up makes economic sense for the Territory.

Given there’s not going to be a dragway, this is one way for the town council to throw the revheads a bone.
