ACT has cheapo electricity (sort of)

The ABC has the mixed news that the bloated ranks of the public service ELs make our electricity prices look good in national comparisons:

A new report shows the ACT has the cheapest electricity prices in the country.

The Australian Energy Regulator’s first performance report on the ACT’s energy market shows the estimated annual electricity bill for low-income households is $1,597.

That is 3.2 per cent of the household’s annual disposable income. That is the lowest proportion when compared to low-income households in other jurisdictions.

The typical bill for a middle-income ACT household represents just 1 per cent of the annual disposable income.

The regulator says that is the cheapest electricity of all jurisdictions.

Similarly if you’re a two income household, both in public service middle management, $500,000 for a decrepit three bedroom house is “affordable”.

It’s the public service middle ranks driving the average income in the ACT.

Good luck to them while it lasts mind you.

The povo case they use in the comparison is the 25th percentile ie: 75% of Canberra households are richer than this. The mean household income is going to be north of the median which is $94 000.

Since when does an EL household have an annual disposable income of $49 500?

So does $50,000 per annum define a “low income household” throughout Australia, or just in the ACT?

Only in the ACT. In NSW it’s $32 700 and in TAS $27 500.
