The ACT Heritage Library will be closed for two weeks as the team move to a new home.

The ACT Heritage Library and ArchivesACT will close their doors this weekend as they prepare to move to a new home after the library started to outgrow its Woden location.

The library, which collects, stores, preserves, promotes and makes accessible documents that record the history and lives of Canberrans, has grown by 30 per cent in the last 10 years and is now at 96 per cent capacity at its current location.

From this Saturday (5 January), the library will be closed for two weeks as the team move to a new home at 255 Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick, which Libraries ACT director Vanessa Little said would help address the immediate needs of the physical collection.

ArchivesACT, who share space at Woden with the ACT Heritage Library, will also be moving to the new site.

“The ACT Heritage Library is at 96 per cent capacity overall at its current site and it already exceeds capacity for publications, maps and plans,” Ms Little said. “This is an exciting time for the team moving to a new location.

“Once the ACT Heritage Library moves from Woden, there will be additional space available for community use at the Woden Library branch. The move also presents exciting new opportunities for ArchivesACT to delve deeper into the ACT Government’s archives and make them more accessible to the community.”

The ACT Heritage Library and ArchivesACT will open at their new location on 21 January, with opening hours of 9:30 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am – 4 pm on Saturdays.

Terrific news! No parking hassles at the new site!

The transfer of the ACT Heritage Library provides great opportunities to make new spaces for the community in the Woden Library. If you have ideas please let us know.

How about a Bowling Alley, Basketball Court, Mini Golf course or TAFE!

Or any one of the other dozen community facilities the ACT government has taken out of Woden and sold off to developers for new apartment builds.
