ACT Liberals run out of money

[ED] Modified for clarity.

The CT has this report on the Canberra Liberals saying they don’t have much money at the bank.

“The balance sheet of the ACT division of the Liberal Party, presented at its annual general meeting last month, show that at June 30, 2009, the party had only $230 in the bank, compared with almost $95,000 at the same time last year.”

Ah yes its about time that the ACT Libs started imploding again.

Part time Director – part time administrator on seek today – oh and part time Leader of the Opposition (Zeds still in bed – nice one John Stanhope), looks like we have a part time Liberal Party.

By the sounds of it the Children that Zed took out of the nursery to run the Liberal Party can’t count, maybe we should give them some counting blocks for xmas.

Jim Murphy maybe wasn’t so bad after all, at least he could run a business.

*yawn*

sounds like it’s another bit of ALP propaganda.

You give both parties too much credit.

Yeah, sure Mary. None of us plebs have ever noticed any factional shenanigans in the LABOR Party. You only have to look at the quality of MPs to know that they’re all there strictly on merit.

Labor infighting kept in house? *snort* Not sure whic Labor party you are talking about…

Websites go down for maintenance/upgrades from time to time – big deal. What on earth does a website have to do with alleged infighting anyways??

The Canberra Business Club contribution to the Canberra Liberals fundraising is grossly overestimated.

It is telling that following Kent’s departure the incoming management committee chose not to resume full relations with the CBC, despite leading people to believe before the AGM that they would welcome the CBC back with open arms. The CBC was never the cash cow that it pretended to be.

The ACT Liberal Party continues to benefit because some courageous people insisted that the ACT Liberal Party control party financial affairs, and not some unelected group of business men who fancy themselves as political campaign experts.

I agree – who needs the odd $100k here and there?

I doubt very much that these leaks come from the ALP. More likely they come from disgruntle Liberal Party members who are now has-beens within the Liberal party.

Anyway, I wish Wal, Belinda, Justin, Louise and the angry ant a merry Christmas and a more successful 2010!

Factionalism is obviously a fact of life in politics, but I do wonder why it is that only the liberals seem to have so many loud, angry fights and disgruntled former members attacking the party.
(you’re probably right about it being a former lib)

They lost seats to the Greens – a branch of Labor anyway. Hardly a loss of dominance.

What is wirth thinking about is whether business would bother backing the Libs now, given the supreme dominance of the ALP.

In politics, I wouldn’t say that ‘supreme dominance’ is losing two seats in the Legislative Assembly and being forced into a coalition government…

It’s interesting that what purports to be the party of business is less successful at running their investment strategy than the ALP 😉

It’s a little more complicated – basically, the financial problems the libs have now is to a great extent due to the several years of hard work put in by the previous division president alienating Jim Murphy and the rest of the Canberra business owners who used to donate significantly to the party. It isn’t as though they’ve frittered away money, more that their normal sources of revenue have been dried up.

Everything started slowly going to hell around the time they lost government(in the ACT) and progressively worsened up until the end of 07 when Mulcahy was turfed out and Gary Kent resigned. While the parliamentary antics leading up to Zed taking over probably didn’t help the real damage is behind the scenes in terms of membership and the libs relationship with the business community.
– their financial problems derive from those two factors.
TBH the party probably wouldn’t meet the AEC requirements were it not for stacks.

What is wirth thinking about is whether business would bother backing the Libs now, given the supreme dominance of the ALP. Why donate to an outside chance when you can buy access by donating to the sure-fire winner? Oh the demcratic joys of a safe seat. (but on that basis, why would the ALP not just take your money and run, because they don’t need you thanks to unions and gambling?)

Even if this story is ALP-propoganda beat-up (as Thumper and others suggest), I wouldn’t want to be in the Libs shoes.

What Thumper said. An unpaid ALP advertisement.

Who cares what’s in the till if it’s not coming from the public purse.

It’s not as if they’re funded by the CFMEU or the Labor Club industry.

this has nothing to do with anything important. Surely people have half a brain to realise that the party leader in the assembly does not actually run the party nor its finances. Idiots who think that are the reason we suffer with the current government when they waste their votes.

There’s an old saying in rugby league “if you can’t run things in the front office you can’t win games on the field”. The same applies to political parties.

While this suggests that the ACT Liberals’ administration is a mess (which in turn will impact on their ability to attract good candidates, support their members in the Legislative Assembly, prepare for the next election, etc), the comparison with 30 June 2008 is a bit unfair as that would have been the party’s war chest just before the start of the election campaign.

It’s interesting that what purports to be the party of business is less successful at running their investment strategy than the ALP 😉

Clearly the Libs need to invest in a poker-machine like scheme that scams funding off the poorest of the poor – problem gamblers or some other group of addicts. Then the Libs can manage their finances just as well as that cashed up ALP.

At least they’re not holding onto a fortune of everyday folks gambling addictions.

If only the liberals had all the poker machines the ALP has they would be rolling in it.

I doubt the ACT libs would die. Fed libs would do something well before that day… The symbolism of having a political party die in Canberra would give the ALP years worth of ammo to use against the Libs Federal.

Whilst I probably won’t vote for them (although I have met Zed a few times, and he does seem like a nice guy) we also don’t want any political party to feel that they have been given a blank cheque (eg no opposition) to do what they want.

Not to worry, we still have the Greens performing the role of an Opposition party so I don’t know that we need a third party in this town anyway.

🙂

Does this have anything to do with why the couple resigned from the liberal party last week? I’ve been waiting to see if a story appeared on RA about what was said to the wife that would make hubby walk out. Was it a tiff over money?

Only $230 in the bank? These clowns think the can run the ACT economy when they can’t even manage their own finances?

*yawn*

sounds like it’s another bit of ALP propaganda.

How is it ALP propaganda??? Read the article… documents obtained by the CT, not handed to them by the ALP… anyway… I think it’s well within the communities interest to know if a political party can/ can’t manage their own finances.
