Numerous studies have found that rapid transit light rail AND integrated buses wold be the best solution for Canberras public transport.

Official government studies? I can think of 2. Not exactly numerous.

It would be wiser to implement that integrated PT system now and then let Canberra grow around it. Put planning tools back in the governments hands, not the developers.

Continuing with buses as the primary mode of PT will result in another Gungahlin-like transport fiasco in Molonglo.

Id direct critics to the PriceWaterhouse Coopers light rail business case.

PM, The size of Canberra in population and/or in urban spread?

Most cities in Europe that have light rail are compact high density cities with a look like Braddon/Kingston. Only a fool wants to see Canberra turn out to be like that.

Besides Adelaide 3 times the size of Canberra cannot afford more light rail, and would need some corporation to bail them out, which in this economic times is highly unlikely. What hope Canberra?

If there is no Federal Government teat to suckle on for light rail in the upcoming budget, the dreamers will have to continue to dream. Wait and see I guess.

And once you’ve done all your urban infill and increased the city to 800,000 (yikes), there will be nowhere to put your light rail.

Now is the time. Sadly this is not the govt to do it – even with the greens along for the ride.

Buses are cheaper “smaller buses running more regular”, “and more places”, and there is a lot of duel and triple carriageway road to carve up between cyclist and buses / T4 lanes (T2 transit lane “get real”, “car pool people, learn to car pool”) thank god they are raising the parking and parking fine costs. Lite rail is importing Sydney transport problems, Light rail may work if we double the population to 800,000, It would get rid of the village feel, don,t expand the city too just infill, more apartments and row houses now!!!!!!

Geez… again with the whole “Canberra is too small” view. What’s that view based on? There are plenty of overseas cities of Canberra’s size where light rail is viable.

The Canberra light rail will be opening just after the Very Fast Train and the Multi Function Polis.

The PWC Business Case is a little deficient in some areas, largely as it draws from the 2004 KBR report. This is why it fails to include Molonglo or the airport.

Any light rail route to the airport/brindabella business park should logically extend into Queanbeyan.

Oh come on bigred, they’re not hurting anyone. They probably sit and watch the Simpsons monorail episode………..up until the part where it goes out of control. Then they’d hit the stop button on the DVD player.

Of course lightrail won’t happen here but, like religious fanatics, the believers can’t be turned.

Yeah Shinny Flu the video has already been posted on the ACTLIGHTRAIL website.

Why don’t you guys realise you could stay home and get the same warm inner glow by p@##ing in your pants. Light rail just won’t happen in this narrow minded backwater. Toot toot!!!

You guys are doing a great job. I hope you stay united and realize your objective. You have planning foresight as the only certainty is that the traffic and parking will only get worse. Once light rail is faster & economical people will embrace it, especially when pay parking comes in everywhere.
I did read the submission was generally impressed but a bit disappointed that the indicative route did not include access for QBN in the south and the northern dormitory areas to feed in. Also there is no route to the airport. The logical first step of light rail in the ACT would be the northern line, preliminary work already being done.
The East Lake rail master plan has been sitting with the planners’ hierarchy for months. Having Canberra Railway Station behind DFO will be a disaster like not having an adequate road to Gungahlin. Transporting 9000 people with only buses and cars will be a planning debacle. Such a short sighted decision was made in the 1950s to not have a Civic Central station because of economy and hydraulics. I guess the dream of Holdens gave rise to the Y plan and a city designed for the car.
Future light rail land corridors must not be sold off for short term revenue quick fixes.

Do you have a website Damien?

These types of tactics continue. I met one employee of the bus industry council last year, who is also on the ACT ALP transport policy committee.

Reading the PWC Light Rail Business Case, that was provided to Infrastructure Australia in December 08, you dont find much to make bus advocates happy. yet funnily enough when interviewed on WIn about the report, Stanhope said it meant that he needed to spend more on buses. Which I agree with, but not INSTEAD of a light rail program. Integrated public transport is the key.

It’s a doco on how GM moved in on trams/street-cars. It’s quite long but worth a watch.
