Australian quotes that 69% of fires in ACT are deliberate. This number is smaller for other states except WA which also gets 69%. So its official ACT (shares along with WA) the pyromaniacs capital of Australia.

I think it would be more of a function of population density. The ACT is not very big, and almost all of it is within easy travelling distance. This means two things;

1. Small land area means a smaller absolute chance of fires starting from natural causes, i.e NSW would have far more fires caused by lightning strikes etc.

2. Maximum opportunity for Pyros – all the best fire lighting sites are within easy reach, so the ‘opportunity cost’ is extremely low.

What surprises me is that a place like WA, which is the exact opposite in respect of the above factors, is just as bad. THEY must really have a problem.

Yep its probably because Canberra is so close to the bush and easy access to the Brindys.

Of course, the stat is but a number. It does not take into account the higher amount of stuff we can burn here (ie more trees), as opposed to other cities…

I’m very happy to throw lit cigarette butt chuckers into this category. Irresponsible, stinking pyromaniacs, the lot of ’em.

Oh the irony. A chap called Smokey posting a story about fire…

Gotta do something for entertainment around here…
