Be prepared to pay a bit more for public transport in Canberra from today (4 January) as the ACT Government’s price increase comes into effect.

Transport Canberra bus and light rail fares will increase by 3 per cent, taking an adult fare from $3.22 to $3.32 during peak hours and from $2.55 to $2.63 during off-peak. Concession fares will increase from $1.61 to $1.66 during peak hours and from $0.89 to $0.92 during off-peak.

Customers will continue to pay the same fare price whether they are catching a bus or taking light rail.

The increase was announced in the 2024-25 ACT Budget and is the first increase in public transport fares since 2019 when a fare freeze was implemented to help users during the economic recovery after COVID-19.

However, the 12-month trial of Fare Free Fridays remains in place, so customers will not be charged for bus or light rail travel on Fridays.

“We anticipate this will save a family with two adults and two children around $1000 a year if they catch bus or light rail services every week,” a Transport Canberra spokesperson said.

“The new fares will assist Transport Canberra with our operational costs.

“Numerous investments have been made in public transport recently. This has included a number of timetables and network changes, the introduction of the light rail network, the transition to zero emissions, including a new and expanding electric bus fleet, our new ticketing system, as well as a new bus depot and interchange for the Woden precinct.”

The new MyWay+ public transport ticketing system had a rocky start when it went live late last year. Its procurement and troubled rollout will be investigated by a Legislative Assembly committee, with a report expected in June this year.

The inquiry will also look at the timing of the transition period and rollout, coming during and soon after an election campaign, and the adequacy of the public information campaign.

It will also consider the data security of the MyWay+ system to ensure people’s private information is protected.

More information on the new fares, including a detailed breakdown of the new fare structure, is available at Transport Canberra.

We’ve just moved from Queensland and they have a really good public transport initiative there, of 50c rides for all. While it may not be realistic to have the prices this low due to cost and up-keep, it would be nice to see prices being kept affordable for everyone. I personally think a lower general price across the whole week instead of ‘free Fridays’ would be more beneficial.

Even free public transport didn’t seem to persuade take-up for New Year’s Eve fireworks, judging by the overfilled carparks and 1 hour wait to exit. No confidence in the network?

Great, that isn’t a rip-off price increase. However the private phone providing real time bus maps ( like AnyTrip) still don’t seem to be getting real-time bus location yet. That’s a pity, the sooner the better, unless my phone is having a hissy-fit…

Whatever happened to the old idea of making Public Transport free to avoid congestion, etc etc… There was a long list of arguments for this as I recall.

While I am at it, what ever happened to the idea reducing stamp duty and other taxes – to make housing more affordable?

Finally – this government loves to blames high rents on landlords, but Land Tax (a tax on renters, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise) is higher than ever.

Rates have been steadily rising – and we were told that that was to get rid of stamp duty, reduce other taxes like land tax, and to provide other essential services. But it seems to me that all we have been getting is higher rates and higher service fees and none of the promised tax reductions and services.

Not The Mama very well said. Land tax here is ridiculously high. Mine has gone from just over $1000 in 2018 to over $4000 in this year. You cannot increase rents by those ridiculously percentage increases bit it’s OK for the ACT Government to do so. Anyone thinking of investing in property in the ACT needs their head read. Go across the border where they have an unimproved land threshold.

What’s the point of fares?
Fares discourage use and the thing is 90% paid for if users use or not.

It doesn’t sound unreasonable at 3% but there is no mention of the loss of the discount we were getting if we paid via direct debit. A quick look through my old MyWay record and I was paying a discounted fare of $3.05 for peak travel and discounted fare of $2.42 for off peak as a full fare paying adult. This means a real increase of 27c peak and 21c off peak – 8.85% and 8.68% respectively paying via credit card as the 5% discount only applies to MyWay+ accounts. Fortunately it’s still available but how many passengers know of the higher price they’re paying for the convenience of using a credit or debit card?
