The 2011 Shannons Insurance ACT Regional Rally Series was launched with much fanfare at the Stromlo Forest Park earlier today.

In announcing Shannons Insurance as the series sponsor, the ACT Rally Series PR Manager Adrian Coppin said, “Shannons is the insurance for motoring enthusiasts and the local rallying community is very enthusiastic about having Shannons Insurance as our major series sponsor”.

The Business Development Manager for Shannons, Damian Hawkes said “Rally crews, organisers and officials are all keen motoring enthusiasts and they spend their hard earned dollars competing in a sport they enjoy. These are the enthusiasts Shannon’s Insurance is aimed at”. “We are delighted to sponsor the 2011 ACT Regional Rally series and wish every competitor a successful and enjoyable season.” Hawkes added.

The series of 5 events will be contested across southern New South Wales including three (3) events in Canberra and one (1) each in Eden and Bathurst.

Also present at the launch was newly appointed Championship Ambassador, Neal Bates. Neal’s appointment as the ACT series ambassador follows a long and highly successful career that culminated in multiple Australian Rally Championships. “I started rally in Canberra many years ago and the very challenging roads in Canberra’s forests taught me some of the skills I needed to draw on to be a multiple Australian Rally Champion, Bates said.

“This year sees a new generation of rally drivers and co-drivers coming through the ranks of the ACT series. Maybe there is a future champion among them.” Bates added.

The first round of the series, the South East Access Rally Sprint is this weekend in the Kowen Forest, east of Canberra.

.. if I knew who you were you may have received an invite! 🙂

I was thinking of someone who has won the ACT championship once or twice, who has both a 2WD and a (ex-‘master’) 4WD ‘Carriola’ and who runs a servo near an airport (of course, I could just ring him and ask him LOL).

Who knows? I might get all inspired to get the Isuzu PF 60 that is sitting forlornly in my driveway all event worthy again!

Ahh PT wasnt there, but I believe he was planning on it.

Doesnt look like I;ll be there in the datto 🙁

Best to check the BMSC website for upcoming events: http://www.bmsc.com.au

Classic example, yep the events list is there on the right hand side of the page but when I click on it I get this: http://www.bmsc.com.au/index-rallycalendar.html?eventid=928

The event URL is just the main page (& the link doesnt work at that) ?? If I wanted to come & spectate how do I find the info? Why not add the info on the website rather than clog up poor Di’s phone with useless calls.

Am I missing something?

Links??? One of the biggest downfall for rallying in Canberra is lack of info. The BMSC website is hard to navigate and near bloody impossible to find maps to spectator points, has it improved?

Seems to be a trend for motorsport/motor clubs in the ACT – even those who claim to have a webmaster or promotions/marketing coordinator. I only managed to find out about the Kowen Rally Sprint by stumbling across a thread on the BMSC forum by accident.

You know how I usually find out? I have a UHF in my 4WD, I also have a hand held one. When the rallying is on the turn on their private repeater channel on channel 3 & I can hear all the marshals talking to each other.

By then then though its usually too late as I am doing something else & cant get organised to go.

There is nothing quite like sitting at a spectator point on a late winters evening with a hot chokkie watching Datsun 180B’s doing fishies up the road. Lurv it & always have since the days when the Bega Valley Rally used to go all the way down to the Vic border.

I’ll be supporting this series, its one of very few motorsport events left in Canberra that hasn’t been killed off by actgovco or the fun police. Great to see Shannons getting behind it.

Batesy brought out his car for the launch, .. if I knew who you were you may have received an invite! 🙂

Marc, couple names missing this season, as well as a couple doing NSW, ACT, VIC and the WRC rounds who will be very busy.

I just hope to get the datto there on Sat and contest the novice series

Just to be absolutely clear; is the series sponsored by Shannons Insurance?

Nice one Shannons. Haven’t really kept up with who the contenders are this year. Hope it’s a good, and safe, season. Perhaps the series should look to the ACT govco community motorsport funding for support too.

Woohoo! I promise I will pay more attention to it this year. Off to hunt speccie instructions now.

Although, I do wonder where my invite to the launch went to. Were you there, Coffin? Was a certain ex-Bates-Corolla punter there as well?
