It’s that time again where another Canberra driver has taken their eyes off the road and crashed their car.

Details are vague but around 12.30am last night a vehicle what appears to been travelling southbound on Kingsford smith drive Belconnen has come to rest against a tree killing the sole passenger.

So far I’m unable to find any media release but I’m sure they will surface.

If anyone has more details let us know…

So, the real problem is governments that have no nuts, and expect us to believe a load of crapola about speeding? Sounds about right to me.

“As to the problem of paying for the costs of real driver training – why not simply push it onto the individual?”

Name me a single Gov in Aus that has brought in learner licence training that actually teaches you about hazzard perception and car control – which then pushes the cost to more than 500 bucks? It will be claimed that only the ‘rich’ can afford to get a licence….

Mr Shab: what you have quite clearly described are two situations where speed determines the outcome of the accident – NOT that speed caused the accident in the first place, which is exactly the point I’m making. The highway speed limit in the NT IS 130km/h – does that mean everyone who uses the highway dies or lives of Medicare for the rest of their lives? Clearly not. Only if there is some failure or brain fade will the accident occur.

I don’t think anyone is arguing that speed has no bearing on accident outcome. The argument is whether the speeding is what caused the accident in the first place.

As to the problem of paying for the costs of real driver training – why not simply push it onto the individual? That’s what we do for airline pilots, sea captains, truck drivers, and a range of other activities where some sort of licensing to a minimum standard is required.

For all of the “urgent duty” driving the Police have to do there are rarely fatal or even serious accidents as a result. Why is this? They drive fast, in all conditions, at the beginning and end of their shift, often in unfamiliar vehicles. It’s because they recieve adequate training to drive vehicles at those speeds. The Germans long ago cottoned on to this idea – and to get a licence there it’s much more than a few multiple choice and a nod and wink from your friendly instructor. They actually have to prove they can drive.

The problem is that this costs….but how much is a life worth?

Difference is, some dimwit backing their Subaru into a bollard at the local shops probably won’t kill anybody.

On the other hand, boy-racer in his Skyline/WRX/VYBerlinaV8 hitting a tree at 130kmh probably will; or if not will render him so severely injured he can’t do anything but be a drain on Medicare for the rest of his life.

“Or – you can allow people of various skill levels to drive around, and everyone drives at slower speeds to prevent accidents.”

If driving at slow speed prevented accidents, why do we have car parking bingles? Speed, in itself, is not really the issue. Car control (of which speed is one of many factors) is what it’s about.

DJ – you need to understand the basic difference between the cause of an accident, and factors that contribute to it’s severity.

or pay lip service to it all through the odd RBT and speed check.

Or – you can allow people of various skill levels to drive around, and everyone drives at slower speeds to prevent accidents.

We all know that there is an over emphasis on saying speed is a factor. The reason is that the pollies are afraid to embrace a risk based approach to road safety and go after driver skill which may well mean delicencing lots of voters who have held licences for 20 odd years.

DJ,

Thanks for your input.

Point is, the comments on the accident by the plod did not include any mention of alcohol, fatigue, inadequate driver training or lower testing standards!
The mantra is speed! Can you not realise that the average punter sees this constant reference to speed as the major contributor to accidents as a means to soften us up to accept ever more draconian speeding enforcement and fines. That these fines happily spill into Government coffers give our politicians the reason to require police to concentrate on speeding.
You are flat out fining someone for driving whilst tired, driving with less than adequate eyesight, driving whilst distracted by kids/stereo/passengers, or just plain driving with your brain on another subject entirely. There is just no money in it.
Follow the dollar!
Forgive my contempt!

What rubbish: “revenue raising spin so often put on these accidents”

How can speed not be a factor? If a VY Berlina (with or without added grunt) hit a large unforgiving tree at speed of 5 kmh would the driver suffer more or less injuries that if the same vehicle hit the same tree at 50 kmh?

Speed, alcohol, fatigue, inadequate driver training and lower testing standards for vehicles ALL contribute towards fatal accidents.

You would have to be a fool to believe that speed isn’t a serious factor.

“Helps to justify the random speed camera tax some people have to pay”… put your aluminum beanie back on.

The police’s masters run the speed cameras. All the fines go to the same place anyway.

or get any revenue from said speed cameras or the fines they hand out. They might be better resourced if they did.

Police don’t run the speed cameras.

As VY mentions above, perhaps tiredness contributed. Alcohol may also have been involved, and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that it was a suicide. The automatic assumption that speed killed is simply to reinforce the revenue raising spin so often put on these accidents.

I have always maintained that there needs to be two road tolls. One for accidents and other for all deaths that occur when someone broke the law. This could help to gain more accurate picture of what the hell is happening on the roads (if the laws are already being broken, more laws won’t help, etc).

For example, i was in Orange a few Christmases ago and my brother in laws friend decided to surf the roof of a truck going to Bathurst. He fell off the roof as the truck didn’t get any red lights in town so didn’t slow down again to a safe speed. He died two days later. That death counted in the annual road toll which i think is damn useless.

Most Canberra drivers think that to control their car, they press the brake. and then they hit stuff.

Too true VY, there’s always some bit of crap in there along the lines of “Police investigators believe that speed was the primary cause of the accident …” which seens a message to the gullible public. When the coroners report comes out some months later no ones listening anyway. Its worth having a look at these some time. Speed – as a contributing factor – is mentioned in a paltry minority of fatal accidents.

VYBerlinaV8 now_with_added grunt11:22 am 05 Jun 07

They always quote speed as a contributing factor. Helps to justify the random speed camera tax some people have to pay.

It couldn’t just be that the driver was tired or distracted, and stuffed up.

From News Ltd

Head of ACT Police traffic operations, Superintendent Michael Chew, said police were not discounting speed as a contributing factor.

Wow… if the car was moving, no matter how fast, speed will always a contributing factor. That is of course unless the car was not moving at all!

Interestingly, News Ltd have the car travelling northbound on Kingsford Smith Drive.
And ABC news have it as happening on the Higgins side, which is likewise the Northbound lane. Geeze, etnies_man, get your facts straight 🙂
