ACT the centre of car rebirthing in Australia?

ABC Online have a story on what could be a problem with our car registration systems in the ACT as it seems we have a reputation as soft touches.

The court heard two men from Sydney’s Bankstown were attempting to register a BMW and a Subaru Outback yesterday when they were arrested by police.

Barry Allen Knowles, 53, and 32-year-old Ali Malas were charged with receiving stolen property.

Knowles and Malas were granted bail of $5,000, each with a similar surety.

Think we’ll ever see them again? Won’t take too many stolen cars to pay down what they’ve dropped on bail.

I’m not gunna read it either, but I’m tipping Thumper is correct.

Following this, Pratt’s got a media release out today about it (I couldn’t actually be bothered reading it, but others might be)

Theft, ‘chopping’ and Rebirthing occurs in every city in the country. The ACT takes this as seriously as any other state.

The two gentlemen in question would have to be retarded to try and compliance a hot car in the same state they were stolen from! The VIN (Vehicle Identifiaction Number, found on most major car parts and the Compliance Plate under your bonnet) would be identified by the RTA immediately.

The VINs are getting increasingly harder to doctor, and they are examined pretty carefully in all the registry office I have been to (VIC, NSW and ACT).

So, next time the media wants to talk about the “rebirthing capital” of Australia they should pull their heads out of their re-feeding asses and take a trip up Parramatta Road. Or Bankstown.

Not surprised to hear they’re from Bankstown.

I doubt we have the car market to be Australia’s car rebirthing capital! Journalistic sensationalism I think.

Last time I visited the Dickson rego pits, I came away with the opinion that they take car rebirthing and vehicle identity quite seriously.

I’d bought a Commodore from Pickles Auctions the weekend prior. I had to go over the pits there to establish original Canberra rego.

Whilst there, I had to leave the car with them for 15 minutes and go and sit in a windowless room whilst they ‘inspected’ it. They would not tell me exactly what they were inspecting. Rather mysterious.

My wife reckons the boys there probably did a beer and pizza run in the Commo, but nonetheless, they must have given it a serious looking over – despite receipts from Pickles and logbooks showing the original owers were a reputable leasing company (Totalcare!).
