Theft, ‘chopping’ and Rebirthing occurs in every city in the country. The ACT takes this as seriously as any other state.

The two gentlemen in question would have to be retarded to try and compliance a hot car in the same state they were stolen from! The VIN (Vehicle Identifiaction Number, found on most major car parts and the Compliance Plate under your bonnet) would be identified by the RTA immediately.

The VINs are getting increasingly harder to doctor, and they are examined pretty carefully in all the registry office I have been to (VIC, NSW and ACT).

So, next time the media wants to talk about the “rebirthing capital” of Australia they should pull their heads out of their re-feeding asses and take a trip up Parramatta Road. Or Bankstown.

I doubt we have the car market to be Australia’s car rebirthing capital! Journalistic sensationalism I think.

Last time I visited the Dickson rego pits, I came away with the opinion that they take car rebirthing and vehicle identity quite seriously.

I’d bought a Commodore from Pickles Auctions the weekend prior. I had to go over the pits there to establish original Canberra rego.

Whilst there, I had to leave the car with them for 15 minutes and go and sit in a windowless room whilst they ‘inspected’ it. They would not tell me exactly what they were inspecting. Rather mysterious.

My wife reckons the boys there probably did a beer and pizza run in the Commo, but nonetheless, they must have given it a serious looking over – despite receipts from Pickles and logbooks showing the original owers were a reputable leasing company (Totalcare!).
