ACT Vehicle Inspection Stations

Good morning.

I recently moved to the ACT and require my car to be inspected in order to receive ACT registration.

I am wondering if anybody knows of any registered inspection stations who turn a few blind eyes for very minor issues?

All comments are appreciated unless you tell me to get my car fixed.

Thank you and good evening.

Lucky you didn’t mention you drove 81 in an 80 zone once.

Hi, People of the ACT get angry over a bonafide question. Never knew what that camera on a tall mast was on Hindmarsh Drive. I drive how fast I like, as luckily I turn off to Tamar Street. Later my neighbour confirmed that the cameas take your average speed? I’m going to set up a roadside cafe before the second check point so people can stop and have refreshments and not get fined; thus being able to roll down the hill sans stress.

So you live in Red Hill, near a church and use the Tamar Street exit. I think you may live in Mugga Way. You’ve done very well for a new arrival, and I’m surprised you won’t spring for someone to fix your car. Will you be providing consultancy services at your refreshment stop/cafe? Baths? Goat burgers perhaps?

I recommend opening the café on the median strip in the centre, so traffic going both ways can use it.

I didn’t dislike you up until this comment… What a great way to show you care about your newly adopted community.

I don’t believe for a second the Kerri_Encore is a real person, esp as the language used goes from formal to informal to txt speak from post to post…

So anyway Kerri, about this cafe your going to set up… Will it be for east bound or west bound lanes?
Considering you live near the church I can see some advantages of building your bridge, I mean cafe for east bound lanes as it would be nice and close to where you live.

I’m also sure that if your only driving around the corner, you probably won’t be pinged driving your extremely roadworthy but unregistered (as no one would pass it with even minor things wrong) vehicle over that short distance. Unless of course the vehicle inspectors get wind of your cafe and simply look for the car always parked there.

Maybe just to be safe, and to ensure the vehicle safety inspectors know which car they need to keep a lookout for, you should post your current rego number up here.

Hi all. I still have 9 months Victorian registration for my vehicle. My cafe will be before the Dalrymple Street checkpoint. If I can get my cigarette lighter working, HENCE WHY I BEGUN THIS ARTICLE, the cafe will be in operation.
My language wafts between formal and informal due to reading other illegible articles on this website. Being from a different society I find this flavour of writing interesting. Yes, Flavour.

Hi, would’ve thought language classes would’ve been the ideal option for English improvement. Thank you for your concerns.

Regardless of major or minor issues, you will have to take your car through the Dickson Registry if you require to transfer an interstate vehicle to ACT rego. I have had to do this for a couple of cars in the past.

Fear not, they will find something for you to fix no matter how good a condition you think its in.

Not quite sure about this currently, although I had to go to the Dickson inspection station as well in 2006 after buying a car in NSW.

http://www.rego.act.gov.au/assets/PDFs/Approved%20Inspection%20Stations.pdf says that you can go to any of the listed inspection stations for the interstate car inspection. Maybe things have changed? We’re progressive here in the ACT. It could happen?

I bet that anyone living in Red Hill going into the Dickson office and who fits the description of being dumb enough to ask on a public forum how to go about breaking the law, might get their car spontaneously looked at again.

I mean, nobody in TAMS reads this forum, after all.

Anybody who uses “Plz” deserves punishment of some sort.

Well, I’m not a camera, but my own eyes have witnessed on two occasions in the last month vehicle inspectors pulling cars over on Athllon Drive (adjacent to Phillip) and last Saturday about 4 of them in the car park at Woden Plaza pinging parked cars left, right and centre. One of them was even checking cars out underndeath by using a long handled mirror gadget. I saw about 6 cars with infringement notices on their windscreen on the walk back to my car a few hours later.

It might be worth giving these folks a call. They know a lot about miner stuff.

Because they’re a bunch of people with nothing better to do.

Look, take your car to Ultimate Tunes in Phillip. They’re not dodgy or anything, but they’re nice to deal with and if they do fail your car for something, will fix it without stuffing you around or raping your wallet.

You can dob yourself in here, to save someone else the trouble…

http://www.rego.act.gov.au/registrations/regodefective.htm

I had a 1993 Hyundai Excel fail due to the rear window washer not working and broken clips that retain the sun visors (visors stayed in place even without the clips).

I fixed the window washer by filling the f#cker with water and fixed the visors clips by installing curtain hooks.

Some people in the ACT require to re attempt their Year 12 due to poor spelling as witnessed on previous comments. The minor issue with the vehicle is the cigarette lighter fails to work, thus unable to boil the kettle/begin the in-vehicle barbeque.

I know with things like spot lights or fog lights there are rules that if they are fitted, they must be working, no cracks etc. However they are not required to be fitted, so if there is a crack or a blown bulb you can just remove it and pass rego. So i suggest you simply remove the ciggie lighter, in car BBQ and kettle and you’ll be fine.

Then you can replace them at leisure once you return to under your bridge.

*ahem* Pot to kettle, ‘You’re black.’.

Myles Peterson2:19 pm 14 Mar 12

I’d recommend not driving at all, but unfortunately we have one of the worst public transport systems in the country.

Rule of thumb – Canberrans can’t drive. I’m not sure why. The roads are generally well maintained. There appears to be a licensing system in place, but compared to say, Sydney or Melbourne – the locals have no shared-driving culture and just seem to make up rules as they go along.

Good luck out there.

I agree, a minor issue which doesn’t affect the safety of the car probably doesn’t need to be fixed as a priority, and some inspectors are anal about things and thus would fail an otherwise roadworthy car for a non-issue. So I can understand your desire to not go to such an inspector…

That said I notice that you failed to actually mention what minor things we are talking about, if nothing else it might help us decide which mechanic is able to do inspections which will probably not be too picky about such an issue.

Finally the sort of language you are using in your response is unlikely to get you any friends, apart from being difficult to read, it’s very adversarial, which make me think either “troll”, or at least a person not worthy of my time (yes I realise the irony in responding if I feel that way).

“require” becomes “nead”?

“minor issues” becomes “miner stuf”?

If your car needs fixing, get it fixed. The people who can help you out are called “mechanics”. Here in Canberra we are blessed with a wide variety of “mechanics”, most of whom will be more than able to fix “minor issues”.

Bugger off and get it done.

I just hope the car is able to maintain a constant 95kmh in the right hand lane of any 100kmh dual lane road.

Umm why would the Police even care about this?

Wouldn’t it be more of the Office of Regulatory Services, or TAMS or something like that, you know, the people who actually deal with compliancing, not people who deal with criminal offences. But good theory, do you look over your shoulder a lot?

+1 or just someone really dumb.

OP – get your car fixed. You’re going to get caught sooner or later.

If the issues are really minor, then the car would still be passed or be addressed for little cost. If the issues are so bad that it would fail and you don’t want or can’t fork over the $$$ to fix, the obviously they post a risk and you shouldn’t be on the road.

colourful sydney racing identity11:57 am 14 Mar 12

*popcorn*

Get your damn car fixed.

Choices:

1. Get your car fixed; or
2. Go back to wherever you are from.

Good Morning and Good evening?
Kerri just get your car fixed otherwise it will end up on the side of the road like dozens of others.
The great thing about Canberra is you dont have to pay to get it inspected each year, just fixed when it needs it.
Save yourself the hassle.

If you don’t get minor issues fixed, they turn into major issues. These then cost more to fix, and can significantly compromise your car’s safety.

So if you don’t get them fixed now, the potential cost – both to you, and the rest of us who share the roads with you – will be greater.

Do yourself – and other road users – a favour, and get them fixed.

devils_advocate10:36 am 14 Mar 12

First of all, I smell pork. This reeks of some half-arsed attempt by the cops to catch someone out.

Even if it’s not, if someone knew such a “friendly” (or even reasonable) inspection station, they’d be mental to post up on a public forum.

If your car is quite old, the inspection station will HAVE to find something, even if it’s just tires, because it looks suspicious if an old car goes through without anything picked up.

If you are a female, have a male friend who knows something about cars take it in for you. There was a study carried out by CHOICE magazine with a reasonable sample size saying women tended to get overcharged for mechanical work.

Finally, if it’s small/minor issues, then it won’t cost much to get it fixed, so get it fixed. If it’s a huge safety issue, it could be expensive, but be thankful it didn’t kill you or someone(s) else, and get it fixed.

I must’ve got lucky, because when I had a 1978 “classic” vehicle inspected in Canberra after transferring it from Victoria, the inspector passed it with flying colours. There wasn’t a single mark on the form. During the restoration process it became apparent that the inspector had missed a bunch of pretty basic stuff like rear rego plate light not working, windscreen wipers functioning erratically, no rear mudguards etc etc. So, I think it’s the luck of the draw.

In the ACT you don’t have to get yearly inspections like most other states. So just get them fixed, and then you will never have to worry again…

Generally I find that there are approved places who are specialists on one field, and not necessarily very cluey (or care about) things they can’t fix (and so can’t charge for). So if your car has a good exhaust, take it to an exhaust shop and they are more likely to ignore other minor things. Or, alternatively, they might be honest and have a social conscience.

Welcome to the ACT.

You might also be interested to know that we have vehicle inspectors who do roving patrols of car parks and defect vehicles with minor issues on the basis that they are frequently an indicator of more serious problems. We also have roadside inspections in conjunction with RBT stops.
