ACT water to go to Goulburn and Yass?

Thumper 19 February 2007 6

IBN news is reporting that Jon Stanhope is considering piping water to Yass and Goulburn if a joint NSW/ ACT application under the National Water Fund is successful.

At this stage no application has been made although Mr Stanhope has apparently written to the Prime Minister who has approved of the idea.

This is quite a turn around for the Chief Minister given his ‘die in a ditch’ comment after Pru Goward suggested taking water from Googong and piping it to Goulburn.

Could it be that the prospect of millions of dollars from the federal government has changed his mind?

[ED – More likely it’s his and Morris Iemma’s attempt to get shaft Pru Goward’s water plan with NSW going to the polls next month]

Doesn’t matter which way you add it up if it does not rain then there will be no water to send. And again as I said before if your neighbour has no water to wash and is thirsty – what do you do?
It will be interesting whether they can use the snow making machinery in the mountains this year given that less than 70% of the water they use is returned to the system.

It’s about time NSW was compensated for the use of it’s catchment areas. Besides, being part of a wider water distribution network has it’s benefits. I think the local council should try to be open minded and have a long term view of this type of issue. They really should have spent the money used for building the gaol on development of smarter water catchment and storage facilities.

JB: as no doubt Howard’s announcement about yanking back the dam from ACT was clearly an attempt to have voters flow to Pru Goward if they were “poo-phobic”, given Paul Stephenson’s stated support for water recycling. “Any port in a storm…”

There’s a difference between controlling the water, building capacity and being recompensed for it and just having it taken.
