ACT Women's Cricket hits the big leagues

While the men still can’t get a go, Cricket Australia has announced that the ACT has been admitted into the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) and inaugural Women’s Twenty20 competition for 2009-10.

The new competition will provide additional opportunities for Australia’s elite women’s cricketers to play Twenty20 cricket, an important consideration given the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars’ participation in the current ICC World Twenty20 tournament in England and next year’s event in the West Indies.

It will also provide a significant promotional opportunity for women’s cricket in Australia, especially those matches that will be played alongside the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash.

With ACT’s inclusion, the 2008-09 WNCL will contain six teams with the competition starting in late October/early November and ending in late January.

With the right marketing they could get some decent crowds along methinks.

i would just like to say how awesome this opportunity is for the girls not only in the ACT but surrounding areas. you will be surprised by how talented the team will be and maybe some of the people saying the standard of cricket is rubbish….well maybe come and have a look first before bagging the girls out!
also i would be very keen to as how high a standard of cricket you doubters have played???anyone played state cricket for the ACT before???i doubt it.so dont knock it!
i challenge you all to come down and support your team and then make your mind up!i will be there!
cheers!!

#11 – and that is the problem with many women’s sports. Cricket without the 4’s and 6’s, basketball without the dunks, etc. Plenty of skill but lacking the spectacle.

Just caught a glimpse of the Women’s 20/20 WC on Fox. One of the commentators made the remark that the trouble with the Indian batswomen was that they weren’t strong enough to get the ball over the infield. I can’t see the throngs rushing to watch that sort of caper.

And yes, I think men’s netball is stupid as well

Saw it on the news tonight. Does Canberra have enough lesbians to support a basketball team and a cricket team as well?

Yes.

If decent is 100 or 200 people at Manuka then yes.

With good marketing the caps get decent crowds, mostly because there’s no top flight mens basketball in town.

I’d put to you that there are more cricket than basketball fans in this town, particularly keen to get down on a summer’s evening for some 20/20 action.

Now the capacity of Cricket ACT to do a good job of the marketing? That’s my bigger concern.

Yes, they’d love the 20/20 action.

They’d just want a better standard of play to get them down there.

Some of the Caps players are some of the best in the world, we’re talking ladies here who are good in the ACT. Tasmania couldn’t even be assed putting a team in the comp.

Yes, you’ll all call me sexist now, but sorry, women’s cricket ain’t gonna draw the masses

There are lots of women out there who enjoy watching good sport, but also want to be able to relate to the person playing. Seeing more women playing high-level sport can inspire more of us to get active. I like cricket because it’s a combination of strategy and physical skill, and a mix of teamwork in the fielding and solitary achievement in batting (well OK, there’s some teamwork in batting too…).

Wow! Cool! I didn’t even know they had women’s cricket. I’d go along also.

Great news! I’d go watch women’s cricket, despite not being a fan of the Twenty20 game. I just hope the right marketing doesn’t involve lycra bodysuits or other stupidity to “sex it up” for TV. Surely just good playing skills in a format made for TV (cos that’s what Twenty20 is) should get people interested in the game?
