ACT worst in Australia for red tape?

The ABC informs us that the Business Council of Australia has marked the ACT 3/10 for red tape, the worst in the country.

Katy says they’re kinda sorta working on it but nothing’s gone to cabinet.

Having operated several businesses in Canberra I can’t say I’ve ever noticed a lot of local red tape getting in the way.

Would any of our local business people like to share their frustrations in this area?

One of the local laws which is totally OTT is the requirement for all businesses to report to Govco (via their isurance company) their wages paid for the last six months, so that this figure can be compared with the amount specified in their forward estimate of wages for Workers Comp purposes.

The paperwork and time this requirement creates for the insurance companies and small business is a glaring example of bureocracy gone mad. I suspect a pandering to the unions is involved, simply to help them establish some relevance.

This law should be overturned immediately.

I imagine that there will be a new anti-red-tape-certificate required for all operating businesses. You will need to get all government departments to sign off saying that all red tape has been removed (and pay a small fee) in order to have your business licensed.

She’s trying to determine if a focus group is required to write a white paper and if the greens will be required to second the motion, or if they simply need to implement an international tour of “best practice” for cabinet.
