This just in from a friend:

I just heard from my sister that works at the ACTEW Callcentre that all the staff have all been let go.

Supposedly just happened, I have seen nothing on the riotact or Canberra times about it.

We’ll follow up and let you know.

UPDATE: This just in from ActewAGL:

ActewAGL Chief Executive Officer Michael Costello said, “The decision by AGL to close its call centre in Canberra is an AGL business decision. This decision has nothing to do with ActewAGL. ActewAGL remains committed to its own Canberra-based call centre for our customers.”

Very glad to hear that “ActewAGL remains committed to its own Canberra-based call centre for our customers”, but equally sorry for the AGL staff who will be joining the many others losing work around this town.

April 2013 – Canberra people stick the boot in about pay, they are allowed to, so make sure you say exactly how you feel.
1 July 2013 – ACTEW pull sponsorships
2 July 2013 – Canberra times reporting 150 losing jobs.

I thought Canberrans were meant to be smarter than the average Australian.

Yep, ACTEWAGL seem to have got quite shirty about being called out on the CEO’s pay.
These two things, plus halting the recommended price cuts:

Cuts recommended:

ACTEW tanty:

Cuts reversed to a price rise (that we should be happy about ?!?!):

Note Mr Sullivan is only smiling in the last pic! You showed us not to meddle with your pay! 🙂 hahaha!

They weren’t allowed to gouge us so they sacrificed staff on the alter of revenue.

AGL is not ActewAGL. Whilst AGL is clearly a partner in ActewAGL they do also still operate in their own right elsewhere.

I note this story has just been reported as Breaking News on In Wollongong Tonight (formerly WIN News). It may have been breaking news when their show was recorded but after being on RA for over seven hours that tag probably should have been avoided.

ACTEW pulls sponsorship. AGL closes Canberra Call Centere. Does this have anything to do with the ACT Governments decision to buy electricity elsewhere?

They weren’t allowed to gouge us so they sacrificed staff on the alter of revenue.

Now with statement from ActewAGL

According to Twitter they were just on 2CC. Both tweets from @2CC:

“JUST IN: #ActewAGL CEO says “The decision by AGL to close its call centre in #Canberra is an AGL business decision … 1/2 #2cc”

“… This decision has nothing to do with ActewAGL. ActewAGL remains committed to its own Canberra-based call centre for our customers.” 2/2”
