ActewAGL renames electricity and gas networks business

ActewAGL has renamed its electricity and gas networks business Evoenergy, to take effect from 1 January next year.

ActewAGL CEO Michael Costello said Evoenergy would manage the electricity network in the ACT and the gas network in the ACT, Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Bungendore and Nowra.

ActewAGL would continue as the retail brand, which sells electricity and gas to customers in competition with other retail businesses and looks after the billing and customer enquiries.

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) published its ring-fencing guidelines on 30 November 2016 which meant ActewAGL’s electricity network business could no longer use the ActewAGL brand from 1 January 2018.

“A reason for the introduction of the AER’s new ring-fencing guidelines is to help avoid any customer confusion between the retail part and the infrastructure part of ActewAGL,” Mr Costello said.

“What customers will experience from 1 January next year is seeing Evoenergy-branded trucks and staff out and about fixing the poles and wires if there’s a blackout.”

While the Gas Networks business doesn’t fall under the AER’s ring-fencing guidelines, Mr Costello said the organisation had made the decision to ensure consistency by also including the Gas Networks business under the Evoenergy brand.

Mr Costello said the new name reflects the fast changing energy sector.

“Our national energy system is on a rapid path of evolution thanks to disruptive technology and our goal of enjoying a low-emissions future. Evoenergy is part of this exciting trajectory,” he said.

“What isn’t changing is our pledge to our customers to provide safe, reliable and high-quality energy services and customer support through Evoenergy and ActewAGL,” he said.

According to the ABN business name lookup on the internet, the business name “evoenergy” is owned by ICON DISTRIBUTION INVESTMENTS LIMITED AND JEMENA NETWORKS (ACT) PTY LTD .

Maybe Mr Costello could tell now us the full story.

What is there to tell? Icon (The old ACTEW Corp) has always been the holder of the electricity part of ActewAGL and Jemena has always been the gas part. Nothing changed there.

The first paragraph says: “ActewAGL has renamed its electricity and gas networks business Evoenergy” so, who owns the business name?

The owners of ActewAGL namely Icon and Jemena. Not sure what kind of conspiracy you are looking for.

Kind of like the faux rage when ActewAGL contracted Icon to do its IT. Deep down it is the same company who just partnered with AGL for gas provision who deep down own Jemena who own the gas asserts.

Yes, ActewAGL is a partnership between the two entities which is not usually a separate legal entity. The partners would own their perspective contributions to the partnership, as in any other partnership. Which is why both Jemena and Icon show up as owners of the brand name.

Well put. So what’s the conspiracy you are alluding to Dungers?

I am not alluding to any conspiracy JC but if you know about one, please share it with me.

All I was asking was for was the “full story” some of which is now coming from other readers.

The ownership of the ACT’s (that’s us, by the way) regulated and unregulated energy sector assets are very diversified and complex and I believe everyone should be aware of the exact situation.

For example, Jemena, which is Melbourne based, has a 50% interest in ActewAGL Distribution Partnership; the other 50% is owned by Icon Distribution Investments Limited (a subsidiary of ICON Water Limited, formerly ACTEW Corporation Limited). Jemena’s role is to manage the gas network only.

Jemema is 60% owned by SGSP (Australia) Assets Pty Ltd group which is a subsidiary of Singapore Power International. Only 2 of their 8 directors are Australian based. Overriding all this is the involvement of Chinese Government -owned State Grid Corporation who have been buying up energy infrastructure all over Australia in deals worth billions of dollars. They have already bought a 19.9% stake in energy distributor SP Ausnet from Singapore Power.

At the end of the day, our local Actew are minnows in a big ocean. I am not comfortable about it but I guess no one else cares and when it gets to the stage that the switches for our power supply will be flicked from a control room thousand of kilometres from Canberra maybe someone else will say “how could this happen?”

The full story that the owners of the business also own the name?

Um, wouldn’t that be expected?
