Hi everyone,

I realise that I may provoke some teasing for this request (suffer slings and arrows, perhaps), but does anyone know of a good way to learn how to act here in Canberra?

I’m a middle-aged chap transitioning to retirement and am looking for meaningful things to do for the next 40 years. I’ve no experience (other than those plays we all did in High School) but am reasonably outgoing. If that matters at all.

Grateful for any advice.

Cheers

Hi.
My Acting For The Fun of It course for beginners commences on October 19th. at 7 p.m. at ImproACT in Civic. The six session course costs $150 for wage earners and $100 for concession card holders. For further information, course outline and enrolment form please email me at peterbwilkins@aol.com It sounds as though this course would suit your needs.
Cheers.

Acting For the Fun of It

As a six year veteran of CYT and having been on hiatus for the past three years I’d be pretty keen to find some adult theatre groups to get involved with. I think I’m still young enough to enrol in the youth actor’s ensemble at CYT but the management has changed since back in my day and I have heard less than good things about the new regime.

National Acting School. Adults on Monday nights at Canberra Business Park in Downer. Great Fun, good range of life experiences.

The school about Kathmandu in Civic is Impro ACT:

They run really good classes and also do a short Impro show at the Hellenic Club on Monday nights sometimes. They also run the National Impro Workshop in July.

The classes at Impro ACT are loads of fun and are great to do.

The classes seem to run in terms, but give them a call or an email and see what they have going.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I’ve looked up CADA and also the National Acting School but since I’ve no experience in the area I thought I’d check with the wisdom of RA.

Stinger, I’ll be in Civic later this week so will drop by. I thinnk I know where you mean – above where Electric Shadows used to be?

Canuck, the less formal courses sound just the ticket, so I might do a search for Mr Wilkins too.

Really appreciate it everyone.

If you look up CADA (Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art) you will fing they offer a variety of good courses. Also, Peter Wilkins, a retired drama teacher from Narrabunda College, gives courses about twice a year, I think, called “Acting for the Fun of it”. I highly recommend him. There is also ImproACT. They give beginners courses several times a year…mostly an introduction to improvisation stuff, but good for the acting muscles, all the same 🙂 They are based out of Dixon, whereas the other two are on the south side.

There is a school that offers night courses, located above where Katmandu used to be…down near the casino. Can’t recall it’s name, but there are curved stairs that take you to it’s door.
Hope that helps.
