ACTION will provide a free bus service on Christmas Day so people can get to Christmas events and spend the day with family and friends.

“ACTION will operate 14 special bus routes that will travel between major shopping centres and local town centres on Christmas Day – all of which will be free,” Acting Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Yvette Berry said.

“I’d like to thank the ACTION staff for working on Christmas Day and helping people to see their family and friends.”

Ms Berry also reminded ACTION passengers that a revised timetable is in place until Friday 8 January 2016.

For more information and timetables, visit the ACTION website www.action.act.gov.au, call the ACTION & MyWay information line on 13 17 10 or use Google Transit to plan your journey.

To paraphrase former PM Malcolm Fraser: There is no such thing as a free bus.

Ohhhhh yes there is, I have a free bus pass for me and my wife and dog….
So all 3 of us can board a bus in Banks and take 2hours to get to Kippax and it costs us nothing….. Or I can drive and it will take 30mins….Wonder what it would cost with Uber….

If they can manage a service on Xmas days it makes the early start and late end date of their holiday timetable more questionable. When questioned previously I believe the response has been ‘bus drivers like to spend time with their families and have holidays like everyone else’.

The EBA penalty rates may be too tempting to resist.
Does anyone know what they are?

Yeah good to see. It might surprise some that even in a city like London they don’t have buses on Christmas day. In fact the only public transport on xmas day are taxis and tour bus companies that run in the central area and charge ridiculous prices.

Perhaps it is not ‘free’ when you drill down, but it is the right thing to do to have public services provided in this way. I am much happier to pay for this through my rates etc than the large amounts of money already wasted on the clearly unviable tram.
Good on you, ACTION and the drivers involved. I hope they got penalty rates!

Oh come on. At least ACTION is having a go. And the drivers are giving up XMAS day with their families too (even if they are probably being paid well for that).

Good on you ACTION !

That’s right.
By giving “free” bus rides to drunks is aiding and abetting substance abuse and probably domestic violence.

Yay – A FREE Xmas day Tuggeranong bus service that loops around parts of Tuggeranong (without going onto Woden or Civic) before returning back to the Hyperdome.

It’s like all my Christmases have come at once.

Well, if you live in Tuggeranong, and have family in Tuggeranong but don’t want to or can’t drive, then it will work for you. I’d rather that than the Gungahlin loop.
