TAMS are letting us know what they plan to do with the iconic yellow bus stop markers that have adorned Canberra’s bus stops for decades as they give way to NXTBUS posts:

Vases, carver’s mallets, sculptures and the legs of a workbench are some of the pieces the old ACTION wooden bus posts are being ‘turned’ into after being replaced with new NXTBUS posts.

“Over 250 of the wooden posts previously used to identify ACTION’s bus stops are being recycled,” said Bren Burkevics, Chief Operating Officer, ACTION.

“The majority of posts have been donated to the Woodcraft Guild ACT for its members to use in their woodwork projects and approximately 60 of the posts were given to the Batemans Bay Men’s Shed to allow members to develop their woodcraft skills.

“The wooden posts are made of either tallow wood or hardwood which are great for woodturning purposes, so what better way to reuse them than to have them transformed into something that can be used in the home.

“A number of ACTION staff are very passionate about the initiative. They didn’t want to see the postsend up as firewood or sent to landfill and are very happy to see the wood is being used in a valuable way,” Mr Burkevics said.

Dan Steiner, President of the Woodcraft Guild ACT, said that as a woodworker getting hold of free or low cost wood is often a challenge.

“Our members are always looking for pieces of wood to create something spectacular and we often find ourselves in need of pieces for our workshops and training sessions to enable beginners to practice their skills and experiment with different techniques,” Mr Steiner said.

What about the metal ones that aren’t being used anymore? With the timetable changes, there’s sure to be a few stops that no longer need signposting…

I hope they are going to keep a couple intact and put them in the national museum.

I approve of this use of recycling

There’s one in the brindabellas complete with the old concrete bench I’m keeping hush on its location

There used to be one up on top of Pigeon House. Some spoilsport in a NPWS uniform probably took it away.
