ACTTAB fraudster gets a year for stealing $1.4 million

The ABC has the sad tale of Pamela Close who stole vast sums from the stunningly incompetent ACTTAB by placing bets after races had closed thanks to the fact she was working for them.

(Staff loyalty is one thing but perhaps not a great idea to take bets from your own workers any of the time)

Close told the ACT Supreme Court how she gave some money to charity and used the rest to gamble on racing, poker machines and online betting.

Close carried out the scam for more than a decade from 2001.

The granny’s getting one year in the clink and another 18 months of weekends in periodic detention.

So was she placing bets on the tote after races had finished or fixed odds betting?

If its the first, which I would think is more likely, isn’t she actually defrauding other punters rather than ACTTAB itself? They’d still he getting their commission on the bets wouldnt they?

Does anyone know what she was actually doing?

She was opening up the race and putting on winning trifectas

If that’s the case, then how did ACTTAB lose money? Her money goes into the pool, the trifecta pay a little less and ACTTAB still take their cut. The only losers would be other punters.

It’s all fixed odds though so ACTTAB must pay the winnings, regardless of how much money is put on the race.

I’m still amazed that she was able to get away with doing this for such a long period of time. How? How was this possible?

No, trifecta’s aren’t fixed odds. If she was opening up the Tote pools and placing bets, ACTTAB doesn’t lose anything.
The Tote just divides the amount of total money bet and divides by the amount of winning bets minus commission.

Tom Waterhouse is offering good odds that she’ll be out in under 8 months…………..

I’m sure that like most crims, she’s very sorry. That she was caught.

I’d be asking who ACTTAB’s external financial auditors are, and whether any of the money could be recovered on the basis of professional negligence.

Ha $2.75 which she claimed as a tax deduction..

Two and a half years ….. then off to the Caribbean no doubt!

Whilst I don’t condone fraud or theft in any form by anyone for any reason, I have to say she’s he most sensible punter I’ve ever heard of.
