In this video (sorry they disabled embedding) we see three motorists turning around a corner at a dubious time.

Are these drivers doing the wrong thing?

I think Canberra drivers need to try harder.

You can get them off ebay for about $40 and they just have suction cups to go on the windscreen

do you have a link?

If you’re serious about a quality dash camera, the BlackVue Dash Cam is well regarded. It has a lot of features that the likes of a GoPro or other cheap models don’t have, like GPS logging, G-sensor event detection, motion detection whilst parked and the new model has built in wifi for direct download to your smartphone. Plus it’s fairly non intrusive, and if you hard wire it, almost a set and forget. But of course it comes at a price ($300 upwards)

I’ve never used or endorse this website, but gives you an idea of what’s out there – http://coretech.com.au/shop/

This video makes me so angry. These lights were put in place to prevent accidents at this black spot. I was unlucky enough to attend an accident at this intersection, before the lights went in, where a motorbike rider was killed because someone failed to give way in the exact same manner as these idiots running the red light. Unfortunately, since these lights have gone in people run the lights quite often.

Interesting I turn here every day and this is the first I have even seen of people running the lights so blatantly and overall I reckon these lights have improved things quite a bit.

That said the dick heads have created new problems, being the bus stop that can be seen in the video. Placed at the bottom of a hill with stupid line marking. Won’t take long after buses start using this stop (which I believe will be when they finish the Starke Street intersection beyond the lights) before someone gets hit.

Which is more evidence to the fact that traffic lights don’t work. I see they’ve removed the roundabout at the top of Lady Denman Drive and have installed traffic lights. Disgusting.

Ps. You didn’t answer the question

There’s no correlation between choice of transport and breaking rules. An asshole is an asshole.

That said however, one particular group takes great offence over being shown evidence of wrong doing and breaks out a retaliatory thread near immediately. If I see a car going through a red light thread or a collection of parking photos I shrug and quietly hope they get cleaned up or a ticket at the least, I don’t foam at the mouth and punch my keyboard until a cyclist thread appears.

…but hey, carry on proving me right 🙂

So you admit you were trolling then? Looking for the reaction you recieved?

When are car runs a red light (with the high risk of killing someone) you dont really care? But when a cyclist doesnt meet your expectaion of courteus they should be strung up?

You will probably find the reason for the backlash by cyclists is because they are over represented in the “I’m going to pick on another road user” whinge threads. Also, because the very people who are whinging are also quite likely antagonising the people they are whinging about by driving too close, not giving way at intersections ect (actual road rules BTW) & wondering why a cyclists get a bit testy.

It is obvious that the hypocracy of this is lost on you and your holier than thou attitude.

I dont think anyone would disagree with your first sentence & that is pretty well what most people were saying in your thread but then you disagreed with them anyway which was odd.

BTW, if it makes you feel any better, I had a go at a couple of cyclists riding agains the little red man this morning. I couldnt have a go at numerous cars that I saw do the same thing though……..

I thought you’d be white knighting a bit harder in the cyclist thread giving examples on why the red light was only a ‘suggestion’ or that no one was hurt so no harm no foul.

As this thread gives as an example, show a cyclist doing the wrong thing and you have people foaming at the mouth in hysterics “mrggghhh CAAAAAAAARS” complete with a retaliatory thread which shows the quality of thought process behind it.

…very little.

What?! No, because the traffic signal is not a suggestion – they are mandatory (though, as the video in this thread shows, it’s not just cyclists that seem to have difficulty with this). Unlike your “Dismount” signs which are advisory (black text on yellow background), and certainly not enforceable since they contradict existing legislation.

If you want me to “white-knight” for the cyclist in the other thread, you might consider that many traffic lights don’t respond to a bicycle (I’ve seen one that wouldn’t even respond to a motorbike). By not responding to a legitimate road craft, the signals can be considered to be malfunctioning and should be treated as a STOP sign (a lot of Canberra road users don’t have a clue what to do when they see malfunctioning traffic signals, eg. flashing orange or blacked out. Come to think of it, many don’t even know what to do at a STOP sign!). It cannot be seen from the video whether the cyclist actually came to a complete stop before proceeding into the intersection.

So does someone’s choice of transportation determine their propensity to break rules?

Invoking me into this thread of tantrums is pointless. Its the same thing over and over anyway.
I say “yep sure, the car was wrong in this case. The cyclist in the other thread was also wrong.”
You say “the murder machine almost killed thousands! The cyclist in the other thread had no other choice. Besides, red lights are optional for bike riders. He did no wrong.”

…and around and around it goes. It’ll just be another 3 pages of that anyway so might as well get it out of the way.

Have fun chuckles.

Clearly the light was unclear or didn’t say ‘please’ before turning red.

Or perhaps the driver just didn’t agree with the red light and thought it was silly and should be disregarded.

He’s been sighted pacing up and down the cycleways near the back of the RSPCA in search of the “Cyclists Dismount” sign that someone in response to the “Dilandach Thread” said was there. He can be heard to utter “Slow Down” to passing cyclists as he wanders down the centreline. He was even wearing a hi-vis vest this morning (straight out of the packet, still with the fold marks in it)!

YHY44Y at the corner of Belconnen Way and Eastern Valley Way this morning… um, if the car in front of you (me) slows down as the light has turned amber and been so for a tiny bit, I don’t think it’s 100% legal to go around them and cross the line on red…. Just saying….

Hope you heard my little horn blast!

That’s half the problem, inappropriate behaviour is tolerated and has been for a very long time simply because they’re aren’t enough police on the roads addressing these issues.

At this very same intersection yesterday I saw an Action bus do the same thing. Apparently all the money they spent on this intersection was well worth it, it’s so much safer now.

Yep, I was driving up Belco Way towards Hayden Drive, at the intersection where that fatal happened last week, a couple in a ute went straight through the red. Idiots. They had plenty of time to stop.

I’ve had similar experiences. I’ve got a Samsung Galaxy 2 smartphone, so I bought a $30 plastic thingy from JB HiFi a few weeks ago that sticks to my windscreen and holds the phone in a position that allows the camera to face forward. I have enough free space on the phone to be able to record my daily commutes, and delete the recordings at the end of the trip.

I normally manage to record at least one hair raising incident every couple of weeks and I’m thinking I might save and edit them into a “LSWCHP Commuting Near Death Experiences” movie as a lesson to my sons on how not to drive.

Go pros are damn cheap now days. Get one for front and back and forever be sorted!

Red light runners are potential killers, and it seems as thought it’s becoming the norm.

I’ve been sitting at an intersection and had 5 cars come across in front of me after I’ve got the green. Given that there’s a few seconds between the change of red in one direction and green in the other, this means that the last vehicle probably entered the intersection 5-10 seconds after they had the red. No misjudgement there, just deliberate, arrogant, selfish and profoundly stupid flouting of the law and all common sense.

I’ve also had to brake a couple of times after starting off from a green light to avoid being collected by a red light runner. It’s happening often enough that it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing multiple injuries and deaths caused by these gigantic arsehats.

Are dashboard cameras hard to install ? After two terrifying near-misses in one day yesterday I think it is time I got one.

I like to play a game when driving called ‘How Many?’.

In the times where I’m driving through an intersection and the light turns amber, particularly in cases where I know I probably could and should have safely stopped (as per the lead car in this video), I like to count the number of cars that continue through behind me. My record is five, four of which definitely would have been on the red. As a person who has spent a number of years driving in both Sydney and Brisbane, Canberra certainly takes the cake when it comes to being most prolific in running red lights.

I’ll be the first to also compliment the lovely backing music we get in the video.

And do what with it? http://the-riotact.com/lesson-of-the-day-nick-off-if-you-have-a-minor-accident/97249. The only reason that the police did anything about the Jim’s mowing guy was because he hit the cyclist (and presumably because the video footage went viral).

Until the penalties are high enough to fully justify the extra police resources to actually chase up these “minor offences” any video footage is probably only of use for the internet shame value and in case of a prang.

That’s one reason why I always push a shopping trolley in front of me when using a pedestrian crossing. Steering the wayward things also is good for increasing lower abdominal strength.

Excellent idea. There should be a couple of shopping trolleys on bungie cords stationed at every pedestrian crossing.

send the video to the cops. these people deserve any penalty they get for disgraceful behaviour like that

hahaha, flabby thighs…nice one 🙂

While we’re all talking about poor driving, I’d like to give a middle finger shout out to the wanker in a silver BMW on Adelaide Av who broke about 6 traffic laws (one included cutting off a bus by crossing solid lines at the Yamba Dr round-about) in the space of maybe 500m and the proceeded to change lanes in the middle of an intersection missing my car by centimeters. This jack-hole then had the nerve to wave his arm at me in protest. If you’re reading buddy, I’ve got you on dash cam and also have you rego.

I ride the corner from Yarra Glen onto Launceston Street every day. The number of cars that blow the red light there is alarming. Even with a helmet camera on and an obvious red light, quite often up to 3 or 4 cars still go through. I’m not talking orange changing to red but red and cars still coming for 7-8 seconds afterwards.

If they stuck a red light camera there they’d erase the national debt.

I guess red only means stop if you aren’t one of the first 4 cars through…

I was on the northside last Friday – after the discussion about running red lights on RA last week. I saw three examples of blatant red light running in one afternoon. From this very small subset of data, it does seem like the northside is worse than what you see around Woden…not sure if the three red light cameras around my area are actually changing behaviours? One thing is for sure, I have stopped my habit of taking off from the lights like a bull at the gate – I now wait and check for a second or two.

i stopped watching when i saw the camera car rampantly going over over those white lines.

This article wins The Riot Act 😀

There’s an intersection I have to cross on foot every morning where scum-tier drivers intentionally run a red light, charging into oncoming pedestrians, and that boils my blood. I would have no problem with the Government installing red light cameras on every signaled intersection if it meant that drivers who treat red light running like a sport were deterred or penalised.
