Adelaide thinks it’s better than us

The Property Council of Australia has released its findings about which Australian cities are the most liveable.

Canberra came second, beaten by Adelaide.

Compared with other cities, Canberra performed particularly well on:
• Having a good road network and minimal traffic congestion (72% agree)
• Being a safe place for people and property (73% agree)
• Being clean, well-maintained and unpolluted (78% agree).
However, compared with other cities, Canberra performs relatively poorly in terms of:
• Being an affordable place to have a good standard of living (30% agree)
• Having a vibrant cultural entertainment scene (65% agree).

I agree with everything except the being poor at having a ‘vibrant cultural entertainment scene’. Nonsense. Sadly these results were found by interviewing Canberrans so 65% of interviewed Canberrans have never looked at our Entertainment section.

Man, Adelaide is going to be unbearable next time I see her.

if canberra had kitchener buns and something approaching handorf close by (sorry, bungendore) then we’d be even closer second. the canberra climate is a winner, though.

Good to see there’s a number of croweaters among us.

Also, pie floaters. Yum!

Oh and some of the best driving roads in the country in the Adelaide Hills!

Targa Adelaide & Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally

Also, Adelaide has green waste bins.

And trains, trams, Soundwave, Womadelaide, Balfours, Fruchocs, YoYo biscuits, Kangaroo Island, cheaper everything. Need I go on??
Can’t wait to get back to a proper city to live (serial killers et al).

Live music, Pub culture, restaurants and fresh seafood (when I lived there Adelaide had the highest number of restaurants per capita anywhere in the world) Wine, Clipsal 500/Formula 1 in the old days. Food and Wine festivals, Fringe Festival ….. all these things make Adelaide a nice lifestyle place to live

Yep haven’t been there for a while but from memory the oval is slightly convex.

You’ll do well to find one that’s not. It’s called drainage.

Adelaide also has the best cricket ground in Aus.

Manuka, same size playing surface as the MCG but you’re never sitting more than 20m from it.

Manuka is probably the worst oval I have ever watched a game of football at.

The footy field in Pambula is actually marginally larger than the MCG surface and you can see all of the ground and all of the game from anywhere around the ground.

Cant do that from the front row of Manuka.

Have to agree…went to a game last year and had seats near the front. It’s great for action in front of your nose, but for over half the pitch there’s no way you can follow the ball or judge distances….it sort of disappears into a single dimension. If they just had more elevation in the stands it would be a better spectacle.
Cricket wasn’t so bad.

having lived in Adelaide for the first 25 years of my life and the last 15 years in Canberra, I can say that each city has their own charms.

Adelaide has great beaches and wineries, but crappy roads (in the metro area).

Canberra is easy to get around and is close to Sydney, the snow and the beach, but suffers from crappy government services – poor infrastructure development and too much of a trend towards urban infill.

There’s a reason that there aren’t many direct flights from Canberra to Adelaide. It’s because we don’t want to go there. I hate having to go there.

I was there a few weeks ago and stayed on Miller Street. If this is what is known as vibrant in Adelaide, i.e. police sirens every 10 minutes, then yes, they are the winners. The person I met with was originally from Canberra, and funnily enough he was a quite happy to bag Adelaide and its residents!

I had a week there and stayed at Glenelg. It was awesome, there was all sorts of stuff going on and if you looked there were some great restaurants around.

I had the best vegetarian brekky in a back street of one of the suburbs (cant remember which) and the best British-Indian I have have ever had.

Adelaide really killed us on the ‘having inventive murderers’ front, although that might be scraping out the bottom of the barrel.

At least they solve their murders over there…

Maybe but they’re not as harsh on sentencing as some might think eg. Jason Downie in a jealous rage stabbed to death 16-year-old Chantelle Rowe and her parents Andrew and Rose at least 112 times and while he got life he will be eligible for parole in 35 years at which time he’ll be 55 years of age.His file should have read ‘never to be released’.

Riiggghhhttt-o then. I’m assuming that only people who have lived in more than one of the cities were interviewed because they’d be in a position to make a comparison. Otherwise we’re just measuring city pride.

I don’t think that they are comparing to other cities. I thought they were surveying to find out which city had the happiest citizens in a range of categories.

In my experience, for public transport, Adelaide is the best capital city, followed closely by Brisbane. Canberra beats Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart quite easily (with the exception of the ridiculous Sunday night curfew). I will admit I’ve never been to Darwin or Perth.

I feel unqualified to pass judgement on any category although I would happily take 12 months of Canberra winter than one month of an Adelaide sumeer.

In Adelaide, does getting a murder conviction earn you more than a month’s weekend detention? Win again then.

Yeah, nah, they used to. In the process of turning it into a much more pleasant 21st century arena suitable for footy they’re going to ruin all the things that made it a great cricket ground.

It’ll still be nice, but not like it was in the good old days.

Indeed, Manuka is probably its equal, especially with the proper old skool scoreboard.

They have much nicer wine and better driving roads.

Not to be a dick, but realistically a survey like this needs to include something along the lines of ‘plentiful employment’. You can have the most cultured, affordable, well run city in the world, but it’s hard to enjoy it except as a tourist if you can’t actually survive there. Adelaide has pretty much the worst job market of any major city in the country. I’m sure some people do well there and love it, but there’s a reason why people aren’t jetting in by the hundreds of thousands.

Haha you beat me to it. Recently been reading about Australian murderers. Adelaide is a pretty messed up place in that regard.

Have they fixed the water up yet ? Can remember visiting rellies their and you used the tank water for drinking. The town supply that came out of the kitchen tap was brown. But that was a few years ago.

Fixed. 🙂

Adelaide also has the best cricket ground in Aus.

Yeah it is in some ways….

Nice beaches (I know thats not Canberra fault but hey!), cheaper housing, weather isnt so extreme in Winter (but is in Summer), not so many public servants…… Better food (fresh food in particular).

Adelaide really killed us on the ‘having inventive murderers’ front, although that might be scraping out the bottom of the barrel.

They’re the one city that’s snobbier than us too, so I guess it makes sense. Plus, what’s with their accent, am I right? Sound like they just stepped off the boat from Merry Ol’ England.

Riiggghhhttt-o then. I’m assuming that only people who have lived in more than one of the cities were interviewed because they’d be in a position to make a comparison. Otherwise we’re just measuring city pride.

Favourite Doug Mulray quote “Adelaide: Yass with poofters”.
