Advice on compulsory third party insurance?

When my wife re-registered her car in the ACT, she selected GIO as the CTPI provider.

Yesterday she had cause to contact the GIO regarding a comprehensive insurance renewal and was advised that her CTPI insurance was not with the GIO and therefore she was not entitled to a discount.

ACT Road Users advised that third party premiums are paid to Suncorp.

So my questions are:

a. Why have GIO as a provider when the premiums are paid to Suncorp?

b. Where do you stand if you have a claim?

Cynically I suspect the GIO representative was just trying it on to get the bigger premium. But who is going to admit to that?

I’m under 50 years old. Can I still pick APIA for my CTPI?

I’ve often wondered how they get away with this, because its discrimination (So is fernwood’s but don’t get me started on that). My guess is if you could join APIA and was under 50, they’d charge you a lot more than if you are over 50…..

I can confirm NRMA do give discounts if you have your CTP with them. CTP and either third party or compulsory counts as 2 policies with them, plus if you are a member you get a discount based on length of membership. That said I’ve just been through a long winded claim that took 4 1/2 months to resolve and it wasn’t about who was at fault. It was just laziness with them and the repairers. But they saved me money when I changed to them last year….. so there is always more to it than just cost.

Suncorp owns GIO, AAMI and APIA, the three alternatives to NRMA for CTPI. So the so-called four alternatives are in fact two alternatives. And APIA are the ones advertising on radio, part of the annoying Glenn Ridge campaign they are running.

Just tell them “Then there’s no point renewing with you then, is there? NRMA give discounts for having both policies with them, maybe I’ll go with them instead”

You talk their language and they’ll usually come to the party, but they’ll usually try to pull a swift one first.

this is a strange response – I am pretty sure it is GIO advertising on the radios promoting the links. will be interested in what you find out.
