It appears that Newcastle are having the same problems with reduced stadium capacities that Canberra is having:

Canberra ratepayers have underwritten millions of dollars for hosting the games being played here and we deserve something better than what has been allowed to happen.

Yeah how Newcastle go a semifinal and 3rd vs 4th game is beyond belief. I’d have though the semis should have been Sydney and Melbourne. Canberra has had much better crowds than I expected. Don’t think Newcastle has had good crowds and they have had better games.

Newcastle has an A-League team however. Canberra tried to establish one but the spectator support simply isn’t here.
The 18,000 crowd at the China match last week was mostly supporters from out of town and I don’t think they stayed overnight and visited our tourist attractions the next day at the government events people might have us believe.

And they’re getting a tram to replace their rail link. Coincidence?

Yes apparently Newcastle, Sunshine Coast and Canberra are all on the tram bandwagon and I believe the Gold Coasts is now running. I’m all for rapid light rail, I just can’t see how the proposed light rail is a benefit to anyone. Saving 3 minutes by catching a tram versus a bus, doesn’t seem worthwhile to me.

This link shows a video promoting the current AFC being hosted in Australia with some matches being held in Canberra.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9oPmA3UvFQ
There is a map in this video showing the nations that participate in the AFC however Israel, who are a past winner of the cup, are not shown on the map.
At at least one of the matches played in Canberra has shown a promo video with the past winners of the cup. Israel isn’t mentioned.
So much for not wanting to offend some people. Australia should be ashamed of itself.

Rather than your conspiracy theory, there is a very simple explanation. Namely Israel joined uefa in 1994, and hasnt been in the afc since 1974. Strange that they left out mention of them winning it, but that was 51 years ago now.

Great to see the decent crowd numbers continuing, and it was a fantastic atmosphere last night.

I agee about it being strange that it was ‘sold out’ however. Plenty of seats spare in the ground.

http://www.jewishnews.net.au/israel-wiped-from-afc-story/39488
It’s not my conspiracy theory and the AFC appear to agree that there is a problem.

There is obvious political motivation, but it may have been because they are no longer in the Asian Football Confederation and haven’t been for a while. Its very easy to cry fould these days, particularly if the opposition are arabs or muslims.
If the Oceania FC were doing a promo I could understand why they might leave Australia out because they are no longer in the OFC, albeit were basically the OFC for many decades.

Israel is just another problem the west created in the middle east and are now paying for it. If there was tolerance and fairness in this world, there would be no need for countries to divide along religious and ethnic grounds.

“Israel is just another problem the west created……”
I think you mean Palestine .

Its probably not the forum for this, but given there is a Palestine team in the AFC cup and not an Israeli side then its seems natural for these things to be discussed..

The land after WWI when the Brits fought back the Turks was known as Palestine and essentially a Jewish state. I believe the Nazis actually sent hundreds of thousands of Jews to this region in the 1930’s before the second world war. The west (UN and USA) created the modern day Israel after WWII in 1948. You can’t blame one side or another for this conflict as both have legitimate claims to the region. People feel sympathetic towards the Jews more so than Muslims, due to terrorism.

There is a lot of interesting history and facts about the whole middle east and in many ways Western countries could be partially to blame for modern day terrorism, because many of these militant groups stemmed from the arming of local groups to fight for western causes in the past without the west having to deploy troops themselves 🙂 The facts of course are not conducive to good news stories over stirring up fear and hate.

There is something dodgy going on at GIO Stadium (or whatever they are calling it now) which needs explaining.
A family member and a few friends tried to attend the China -v- North Korea match last night and after queuing for 20 minutes and reaching the ticket box they were told the match had been “sold out”.
The crowd reported in today’s CT was 18,457 which is at least 7,000 short of a full stadium.
The promoters are on TV telling Canberrans to turn up or we won’t get “world class” games in Canberra again. When people turn up they are turned away when there is plenty of capacity left.
Apparently, a lot of Chinese supporters drove down from Sydney which should have been anticipated.
Hundreds were turned away and there were some ugly scenes.
Well done, AFC people!

Perhaps send an email to that spokesman who told everybody to get off their arses and attend the games, or there would be no more goodies for Canberra?
At least that explains why the stadium was slowly filling up all through the 1st half. I put the shortfall down to ticket holders who didn’t attend, such as corporates. 7000 is a lot though, I estimated there were about 20000 there at the end, with perhaps 4-5000 empty seats.

Yeah, I guess Real Madrid’s decision to erase the crucifix from their club emblem was political also. It certainly had nothing to do with sponsorship from Arab countries.

Indeed there was something odd going on. We arrived about 5mins after kick off (pre-purchased tickets) and there were still hundreds of people trying to get through the main entrance gates. And yes for a “sold out” match there were still plenty of empty seats. Some I understand weren’t sold as there was promotional signage and national flags blocking the entire section’s view but there were plenty of other unoccupied seats. Still it was a great atmosphere, the Chinese fans were extremely vocal and it was a great and even match.

Been to all of them. It’s been great so far even with the poor weather for the previous three games. Maybe they should have employed the NRL crowd counters to boost the official numbers.

I know a few people that have attended most games. None of them have paid. It appears free tickets are easy to come by.
Who gets the proceeds of ticket sales or is that commercial in confidence also.

Great game yesterday, well attending considering the weather. More than the Raiders get (12,552) and for a game that didn’t involve Australia. The South Korean fans did a great job and the atmosphere was fantastic.

One aspect that surprised me was “FREE PARKING”. I caught the free action bus but it’s good to know for the midweek games I can battle with everyone else in the car parks.

As for what benefits does Canberra get? I’m sure there were plenty of people from interstate/overseas that came to Canberra and spent some money in our restaurants/cafes and stayed in our hotels.

As for our events not being well attended, i believe our last 2 ODIs at Manuka have been sold out, the Australia vs NZ League test match was close to sold out and the Netball test at the Palace was sold out.

People always complain there is nothing to do, well there is 6 more games in the Asian cup, the Big Bash Final and 3 Cricket World Cup matches. Get out there and show the world that Canberra is a fantastic place to come to!!!

All the stadiums for the Asian Cup have to be advertising free. Suncorp in Brisbane is just called Brisbane Stadium and Aami Park in Melbourne is called the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Tim

People are short sighted at times. without events, without things to do, less people work here, the government earns less, less money is spent on essential services and everything goes down hill. Government spending needs to be on a wide range of things. You can’t just spend money on Health and education and expect the city to be worth living in.

I’ve got tickets to Afghanistan v Bangladesh WC cricket game. There is a large contingent of local and interstate Bangladeshi’s attending the game. should be a great atmosphere and it was only $20 a ticket!

yep, me. and several friends and associates. and twelve odd thousand others, with about 1500-2000 koreans coming in from sydney [several around me had done this and were staying overnight – so tourism business for the ‘berra, for those asking ‘what’s in it for us?’]

can’t wait til the chinese pack out the stadium; that’ll rock!

I think you’re having a lend of yourself if you think 2,000 Koreans came down from Sydney! Most Korean spectators will have been locals. We have nearly 6,000 Koreans residing in Canberra.

Actually there are Koreans here doing tours to all the Korean games. Just like australians travel overseas to follow a sporting team. There are large numbers of Koreans at the game. Getting foreigners here has a good flow on effect to the economy. Australians bag the city out, but most foreigners come here and love the city and tell others it is worth visiting.

I went out and thought it was great. Heaps of atmosphere and the crowd got right into the game. I wihs we had that type of atmosphere at Raiders and Brumbies games, it actually felt like an event.

The ACT Government also subsidises the Raiders and Brumbies with millions each year so I wonder what makes the atmospheric difference.
BTW, the crowd last night was about 5,200 and I don’t think the Raiders or the Brumbies have ever attracted less than that (yet).

Canberra/GIO Stadium has a capacity of 25,000 odd so it would have been half full as you suggest.
I am wondering if the 12,552 actually relates to tickets issued or bums in seats.
The tickets were advertised “from $14.00” and there were a lot of concessions. On top of that, there are a heap of freebies with most registered ACT soccer players receiving multiple free tickets.
A lot of the issued tickets for the Bahrain -v- United Arab Emirates match are freebies as this match is expected to attract few supporters locally.
Nothing like a little window-dressing.
I wonder how much Mr. Barr paid for his ticket?

I am attending China V North Korea….for some reason this has novelty value to me and I guess the Chinese fans will turn out for a good atmosphere.

I didn’t like that jerk spokesman either, cheeky git…how not to market a game.
For a population of 300,000 even an EPL club would be happy with 25,000, and that’s watching some of the best players in the world in a football mad nation. This Asian Cup has a few good teams but the majority are pretty useless….and Canberra hasn’t exactly got the glamour ties.

The ACT Government’s track record on sponsorship is amateur night. Remember when Mamamia website’s celebrity/personality for hire Mia Freedman was contracted at great expense to be an “Ambassador for Canberra” around Floriade a few years ago? The government forgot to put a clause in her contract requiring her to not Canberra bash for ten years afterwards. So last year she merrily joined in on Canberra-bashing conversations on mainstream media without turning a hair. I doubt whether they did any sort of benefit analysis on the returns from contributing to the Asia Cup. And there are still marks on the roads in the Parliamentary Triangle from the “Supercars” fiasco with all its fudged attendance figures.

I believe the ACT “special events” government is investing about $3 million in this.
I would like someone to explain why.

What direct benefits will accrue to Canberra? I know a few soccer fanatics who are not attending any of the matches so who else will be bothered apart from a couple of hundred expats, there being no matches involving the Australian team.
I particularly disliked the loud-mouthed media spokesman for the promoters who literally ordered Canberrans to attend and support these fixtures or “we won’t get any world class sporting events again”.
There have been some “world class” sporting events in Canberra before and I can’t remember any of them being well attended. Who gets the proceeds of the ticket sales on this one I wonder?
By the way, for the duration of this ratepayer funded “special event”, the venue will be called Canberra Stadium (as reported).
The name GIO Stadium has been expunged.

That rotten game on Saturday night better not cut into Rage’s retro month and the replays of Countdown.
