Affordable housing Canberra style

tent

I saw this tent today tucked away in one of the open spaces just outside of Civic.

It’s very carefully tucked away, you need to be on a pretty peculiar angle to see it. If not for the orange patches and guys I doubt I’d ever have known it was there.

I’m sure both yourself, dear reader, and the resident of the tent are comforted to know the ACT has housing affordability action plans.

I remember that one. Weird spot to use, given the conspicuous nature of being so close to the bike path…

^ Yeah, I came across that guy late one night. I was on captial hill watching the fireworks.

There is/was a bloke who lives in a shelter in the bushes not far from the legislative assembly. When asked why he said he preferred living rough.

The above national average income?

But then again, did anyone ‘knock’ to ask why they are sleeping in a tent there?

Hang on, according to some here there is no reason for homelessness in Canberra. I guess that 1800 number is not working for everyone then?

I presume that even with the housing avaliable that it costs more than everyone can afford. Even with the safety nets in place people are still falling through the gaps. You would think that in this country no one had to live in a tent unless they wanted to or did so through choice for recreation.

Still at the same time, that’s a hheck of a lot better than some people have overseas. Really we should be looking after each other a lot better than we’re doing as a people.
