AFL Footy Show & Footy Classified dumped on WIN HD

Over the past 12 months as an ex Mexican it’s been a delight to be able to watch the Melbourne based AFL Footy Show live each Thursday night on WIN HD at 9.30pm

However, with the launch of WIN’s new ‘GO’ Channel it appears WIN TV have basically told the likes of myself and other local AFL devotees who enjoyed watching Garry, James, Sam and the boys each week live where to ‘GO’ by dumping the AFL Footy Show.

As of this week if us locals want to watch the AFL Footy Show and I understand also Monday night’s Footy Classified also’, it’s back to watching the post midnight replays.

You’d think given the AFL’s push into the Northern States and WIN’s affilitate Channel Nine impending bid for the next five year AFL contract in the near future, WIN would do the right thing and continue to show the AFL Footy Show and Footy Classsified live, even if on ‘GO.

From what I read elsewhere on the net the same will apply on NINE HD in Sydney & Brisbane, where both shows have also been dumped.

Unbelievable !!

Try the day they joust for pole position at the Indy 500. Just the small matter of about 500,000 in attendance.

And I think you’ll probably find the #1 attended sporting event in Oz last year was the Tour Down Under

Actually the number one attended sporting event in Australia last year was not the AFL grand final. The winner was actually the Melbourne cup with 107000 attendees.

I therefore claim horse racing as Australia’s No 1. premier sport.

Giddy Up!!

Hey calm down fellas,
Don’t shoot the messenger.
My source wasn’t the AFL and my argument is about bums on seats, pure and simple.
I’m quoting the stats and if you don’t like them, take it up with Wikipedia.
Given soccer is the World Game, of course I’m not arguing more people watch the AFL overall.
But on a per capita basis, the AFL results are even more spectacular.
Please explain why comparing AFL and Premier League average attendances is “just stupid”.
Your linked list of average attendances at major Premier League clubs is comparing apples and oranges.
Here’s the Wikipedia address: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_attendances
Game, set, match.

I love these posts from people who come here from Melbourne and then wonder why Canberra isn’t exactly the same as Melbourne.

OK, just for a moment think about what you’ve said and then hit yourself in the head a couple of times for me. Unless of course the Federal government has started funding Foxtel in addition to the ABC.

Coverage of the AFL by ABC TV in Canberra is probably the worst of all the FTA channels. At least on the commercial channels you know you’ll probably get the Swans scores, at the very least, but ABC news treats AFL like crap. You’re best bet for decent AFL coverage on the ABC is a few minutes on Offsiders on a Sunday morning.

My dad is bigger than your dad.

Are you really trying to argue that the AFL Grand Final is more popular than the FA Cup?

You do realise that ground attendance at major sporting events is limited by the capacity of the ground, don’t you?

Pelican Lini said :

Hey (not) vg, … was 100,012 at the (you guessed it) AFL Grand Final.
That was over10,000 people more than the crowd at the world’s second ranking event, the FA Cup Final.

The AFL also had the fourth highest average match attendance in the world with 18,839 (beating both the English Premier League and Major League Baseball in the US).

AFL is very popular but comparing it’s crowds to the English Premier League’s is just stupid. You may not have noticed but almost all those football grounds in the UK are rectangular and hence there are physical limits on how many seats you can put in the ground. The same with the FA Cup Final and Wembley Stadium which seats 90,000 (hence the 10,000 less than the MCG finals). The simple fact is the MCG holds more people.

As for your average match attendances where did you get the idea that AFL has larger average match attendances then the English Premier League? Off some AFL forum. Try real research for instance ESPN:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/attendance?league=eng.1&year=2008&cc=3436

You’ll note only Wigan Athletic has a lower average crowd attendance that season then the figure you’ve provided for the AFL.

I can guarantee a lot more people watch the English Premier League and FA Cup final on TV then ever watch AFL.
“The Premier League is the world’s most popular national football league. It is broadcast to 152 countries on a regular basis.”

And the AFL would kill for the advertising revenue the ARL broadcasts generates.

You may recall a crowd of 107,558 at the RL GF in 1999, curiously featuring a Melbourne team in Sydney, the same year each NRL game had an average attendance of over 14,000. The average crowd for an NRL GF at Homebush is 95,708.

Please feel free to do some research next time before making silly, silly statements. Getting into a pissing competition between League, Union and AFL is something most people stopped doing once hair appeared downstairs

Hey (not) vg,
I don’t need statistics to know which domestic football code is faring better but how about we at least look at some figures from this century, say last year.
The highest crowd attendance in the world at a domestic club championship event in 2008 was 100,012 at the (you guessed it) AFL Grand Final.
That was over10,000 people more than the crowd at the world’s second ranking event, the FA Cup Final.
It was also nearly 20,000 more people than the NRL Grand Final crowd of 80,388.
The AFL also had the fourth highest average match attendance in the world with 18,839 (beating both the English Premier League and Major League Baseball in the US).
I don’t know what the NRL average attendance was because they didn’t make the Top Ten.
The VFL/AFL’s biggest crowd was 121,696 at the 1970 Grand Final when Carlton (I told you they were magnificent) beat Collingwood in what was arguably the greatest Grand Final ever.
Oh and I’m sure Melbourne being in the 1999 NRL Grand Final would account for the code’s record attendance figure.
My sources are from Wikipedia entries on world sporting attendances and the AFL.
I note that you didn’t cite any sources at all and I would love to know what are the advertising revenues, which you claim the ARL (?) generates and the AFL would “kill for”, and how you would know what they are.
I know I’m “silly silly” but I rather wonder what was the point of your post, given that the stats so easily back up my claims of AFL superiority in popularity.
And, oh dear, I think you’ve got pee pee all over your trousers and shoes.

LOL at this. How many people “bothered” turning up to the last AFL fixture in Canberra? 6500 or 7500, I can’t remember.

About the same average attendance to a Raiders game..

No, evidently it’s the total number of Canberrans who give a toss about AFL.

Holden Caulfield10:51 pm 06 Aug 09

Looking at those figures vg it looks like the NRL tries to double the total yearly attendance figures when the GF comes along.

I can’t wait for your educational put down. It must suck to have to deal with mortals. You’ve been on fire tonight. Quotas down a bit or something? 😛

Easy mistake to make, KB. I know I did the exact same thing.

As for the subject matter, to quote an ex-colleague or two: tell someone who cares. Which is meant in a nice way, i.e. tell the station. If they get enough complaints, they’ll do something about it. If not, it was probably ripe for dumping.
Seems that more and more sport is going to be the preserve of the secondary channels (One, Go, etc.) And it’s always great to see the local stuff on channelvision.

Well I rang the station and also vented my fury publicly because isn’t this forum a type of electronic Wailing Wall?
I was polite to the receptionist, Jenny, however, because it’s not her fault.
Interestingly, she told me I was the only person who had rung up to complain so I’m not holding out any hopes of a change in decision.
What channel is channelvision on?

Channelvision is a TV station available through Transact or Foxtel/Austar/Optus. They have a website with details.

The low turnout is testament to the fact we’re sick of having Sydney inflicted upon us, both on TV and at Manuka, even though the fans of this mediocre team don’t even bother turning up at their home games.
I’ve noticed so many empty seats at their home ground this season that I keep mistaking it for a League game.
Still more than 7000 would be a bumper crowd for many RL games.
My team, the magnificent Carlton, regularly attracts crowds of 80,000 + and I doubt you would get that many spectators at even an RL Grand Final.

I would contribute to that cause. Instead of worrying about it not being on WINHD, they should get that pile of crap they call the NRL footy show off and replace it with the AFL version.

I thought about getting pay TV before it was introduced until a friend pointed out: “What? Do you think they’ve been hiding the good TV shows to put on pay TV?”
Even free to air is barely worth the price of admission.

I’d place money they haven’t targeted or singled out the AFL Footy Show. They were always going to ditch their HD channel when Go came alsong for the first few months – till October if my memory serves me correctly. All part of getting the new Go channel up and running. Come October, HD will (in theory) be back as will it’s content – includinding the AFL Footy Show….next season..

Growling Ferret5:29 pm 06 Aug 09

Most viewers won’t realise until tonight when they flick over to watch TFSAFL and they get the Go! promo screen.

Go! – where all ratings failures shows go to die.

At least we now have ONE HD. For FTA, its not too bad at all.

That if TV stations had the cajones to publish email addresses on their websites they would get a lot more complaints. 😛

I much prefer troublemaker or hooligan to rioter, which seems to me to be on the slippery slope to (shudder) Veteran Rioter.

I’d like “whimsical”.

Pelican Lini10:21 am 06 Aug 09

I knew it.
Never underestimate the ability of WIN/Channel 9 to demonstrate their pure contempt towards viewers.
To pull The Footy Show off air without warning some two months before the end of the season is a disgrace.
No amount of US crap on Go will compensate for the loss of a homegrown, usually entertaining and informative show about one of the greatest games on earth.
How can they justify taking the show off air tonight when Go isn’t even broadcasting content yet?
Why don’t they replace the boofhead Footy Show, which is boring and unfunny, and catering to a fanbase which can’t even be bothered turning up to games?
Why don’t they dump the repeat of WIN News which is either a spurious attempt to meet local content requirements or a sop to Jessica Good’s ego? I mean is there anywhere else on earth, which broadcasts a repeat news programme?
They can Go Fcuk Themselves.

Why am I not shocked by this?

Footy supporters here are not a consideration at all.

Being part of the affiliate networks is a big problem and one that I don’t think will go away.

I never remember to watch these shows anyway. Mostly because the only person who is a bigger wanker than Garry Lyon is James Brayshaw. And the only person who is a bigger wanker than James Brayshaw is Sam Newman. And not even Andrew Demetriou is a bigger wanker than him.

I doesn’t bother me as I usually only watch League Teams and Before The Bounce on Fox. But the one thing I hate is when Sydney are playing, Foxtel and which ever FTA station usually shows the game at that time move the heavens and the earth so that we all get to Sydney play. The worst one was when Prime showed Sydney V North instead of the Saints and Cats. Luckily over a Foxtel they made the right decision. This really needs to stop.

I just noticed, How come I am a trouble maker?
