The Australian Federal Police are letting it be known they’re opening a new facility at Snow Town:

The new facility is the third of its kind to be unveiled across Australia’s major airports, and was built as part of the Federal Government’s measures to strengthen aviation security.

To date, the new AFP Aviation facilities have been built and leased at Murwillumbah, Sydney and Darwin, with construction currently underway at the other major airports throughout Australia. The remaining facilities are scheduled to be completed over the next two years.

The new facilities include an Emergency Operations Centre, Airport Police Operations Centre, muster rooms and training facilities, exhibit handling facilities and interview rooms.

I wonder what they pay for rent out there in snowtown?

The airport is leased from the Commonwealth and regulated by the Commonwealth DIT.
Money goes around and comes around but it’s fair to say that the Commonwealth made a tidy profit, and through landing fees and other charges continues to.

wow, all that for Snow’s parking police? Their main job seems to be catching people who try to pick up friends/relllies arriving on aeroplanes and failing to use taxis, like they’re apparently meant to.

Yep last time I was at the airport the AFP guys were acting like belligerent thugs towards someone who’d apparently stopped in the wrong area. They are real tough guys.

As are anonymous internet posters

And here we go again…

Murwillumbah, a town of 7500 people has a major airport (and AFP Aviation security facilities). Who knew?!!! Must be a hot spot for flying terrorists… or something :-/

Murwillumbah? The town barely 20km south of the Gold Coast and a major airport at Coolangatta? Not to mention 150km or so south of Brisbane. Does anybody know why it was established in Murwillumbah instead of those other key airports nearby?

Traffic density probably. Murwillimbah would be a nice quiet airport where you wouldn’t have to wait long for a takeoff or landing slot. There’s probably more and cheaper real estate available at Murwillimbah than either Coolangatta or Archerfield as well.

They are interested in what is being grown in the hinterland – same reason they are setting up in Canberra.

I’m sure they are interested in peoples agricultural foibles, but I doubt that had anything to do with putting it at Murwillimbah. You could just as easily get to the hinterlands from Archerfield as from Murwillimbah.

If you say so.

Are they installing a revolving beacon with a bat profile a-la-Gotham City?
