See, I know you are being sarcastic, because you can’t eat a donut on your head. You need to hold the donut and the radio in the same hand.

I like the way you think!

BTW my comment at #31 was in response to #28.

Reports say the Zafira was turning right from Morshead, cant see any legal right turn opportunities there so is it safe to say it was trying to make an illegal turn.

Seeing as the crash involved an AFP protective services vehicle, not an ACT Policing vehicle, why all the vitriol at the police? (Not that there should be any against the protective services either…)

Only if they pass 😉

Most police patrols are two up, genius, so the offsider operates the radio and answers calls. I can’t believe that needs to be explained to you. But yes, they also have magical training at police college, where the driver holds the radio in one hand, the phone in the other, while driving with his knees and balancing a donut on his head.

In a rear-ender, the driver in the back is always responsible.

Normally this is the case Deref but I was talking to a bloke last week about this. His son was travelling to Portland in VIC & was slowing down to pull over on the highway to look at something & was smacked up the back by an International truck.

Copper booked him for failing to indicate (not sure of the exact circumstance) & the truckie got nothing.

It was always my understanding that you always had to avoid the vehicle in front, if not then its your fault. Not in Portland it seems……

lol @ Tooks, do they get issued with a white rabbit and top-hat too?

olfella – Could it be the cop was on his mobile phone or chatting on the radio at the time? Just speculating…

Sadly, if a member of the public did this, it would be an instant fine

Yeah, funny about that – being illegal and all. Is that the source of your hatred towards the police? You copped a fine for talking on your mobile?

but police officers are allowed to use their phone/radio because they have magical training that stops them getting distracted

Having helped out at a few major crash scenes, I can tell you that there is a set amount of activities that need to happen – some can run concurrently, but most must be consecutive. As such there will be times that some police will be standing around, waiting for the chance to start their task.

As for PR, who cares. Noone likes cops anyway, and they would be liked even less if they have a driver get let off in courts if they mucked up procedures at a crash scene (it’s hard enough getting a court to punish someone in this territory without police errors).

bd84 – I love stories like Nothwest9?s. Total speculation on who was wrong and right based on what his best mate said, so it must be totally true.

Until you read the facts and see that he was indeed there, and provided his own independant account, but it was anti-police so it must be totally made up. wait, what?

vg – Bullshit. For starters how do you move into a parking spot from neutral…..mind power?

Generally, if youre reverse parallel parking, you change from a forward gear to neutral to stop, before looking behind you and selecting reverse. How do you reverse parallel park, without going through neutral? Do you just look in your rear view mirror while driving slowly forward, then whack it into reverse and quickly chirp the wheels to reverse back?

DJ – PR… huh? Get over it – would you prefer they saluted you as you passed?

Id prefer they took their hands out of their pockets and GBTW. Standing around with your hands in your pocket should be reserved for construction crews and roadworkers, not police responding to an accident during peakhour on a major arterial road. I guess we have different expectations of police though.

What a childish response.

Evan,

If Police could decide where accidents would happen to cause the least amount of traffic chaos don’t you think they would? Hope this incident didn’t cause you too much angst.

PR… huh? Get over it – would you prefer they saluted you as you passed?

It certainly caused chaos with the traffic in the area. It would be nice if the police were mindful of this when conducting their activities. It’s not good PR to have police standing around with their hands in their pockets being observed by drivers who have spent half an hour stop/start crawling to get past the incident.

was i there? yes.

was he indicating? yes

he dropped it into neutral, checked mirrors, about to select reverse. BANG.

but that cant have possibly happened, can it, i mean, cops never do any wrong do they?

Article in CT quotes a superintendent as saying it’s “too early” to determine who was at fault. At the same time it says the police vehicle was heading north and the other vehicle was heading south and attempting to turn right. There’s no right turn from all but the approach the police vehicle was on. Sounds pretty clear cut to me.

Why speculate at all? Maybe the cop screwed up – they are human (well, most of them…).

@ajd – thanks, I didn’t know that.

Haha vg…mindpower is the new green tech in cars!

Could it be the cop was on his mobile phone or chatting on the radio at the time? Just speculating…

why speculate?, it’s not an offence

“mate of mine was parking his car one day, pulled up, selects neutral, looks up in rear veiw mirror, ready to begin moving into park and bang, off duty copper arse ends him.

copper blames my mate, despite it being very clear what was happening.

in the end, cop negligence is ignored, mate gets a neg drive charge.”

unsafe parking, could have been your mates fault. It was his CHOICE to pull up then, if it wasn’t safe to do so …

Could it be the cop was on his mobile phone or chatting on the radio at the time? Just speculating…

Northwest 9 says:

‘mate of mine was parking his car one day, pulled up, selects neutral, looks up in rear veiw mirror, ready to begin moving into park and bang, off duty copper arse ends him.

copper blames my mate, despite it being very clear what was happening.

in the end, cop negligence is ignored, mate gets a neg drive charge.’

So you were a witness to the incident or you were just told something by your mate? Interestingly in your recall of what you were told your mate failed to activate his indicator perhaps that was the problem? But then again you were there to witness the incident…..

@Deref: not always – the driver in front can be at fault if they move into the lane where there’s an insufficient gap.

mate of mine was parking his car one day, pulled up, selects neutral, looks up in rear veiw mirror, ready to begin moving into park and bang, off duty copper arse ends him.

copper blames my mate, despite it being very clear what was happening.

in the end, cop negligence is ignored, mate gets a neg drive charge.

Hope everybody involved is ok.

The other contributions are missing the normal human reaction “I hope everybody is alright”… for some reason most people on RA forget that Police are people just like them.

I happened to be out that way today. Looks like somebody ran the lights and got t-boned.
If a cop wasn’t involved in the accident, I’m sure traffic would’ve been flowing a few minutes after the collision.

The police wagon looks like it has rolled a few times.

The other vehicle there had it’s front bashed in, so I’m guessing someone ran the lights. The light bar from the paddy wagon was lying in the middle of the road, and for some reason, they initially put up screens around the police vehicle (which is off the side of the road) but a short time later removed them.

What I don’t get, though, is the need to close the road for so long – it’s having a disastrous effect on traffic coming from Fyshwick and the Monaro highway.

Were taking bets on car accidents now?

In a rear-ender, the driver in the back is always responsible.

My money is on a rear-ender, I shan’t make any claims as to who is repsonsible.
