AFP HQ sealed off 1300- Thursday

By Thumper - 10 April 2008 24

News flash

Cops, hazmat, FB at AFP HQ.

Mort street has been sealed off.

Early reports indicate white powder scare.

[Ed. this more detailed submission came in from M1ckx]

There is some commotion today on Mort St. Since around midday the AFP head quarters building has been taped off, with the ACT Fire Brigade’s Hazmat team in response. Current scuttlebutt acquired through a colleague who is ex-AFP is that it is to do with a package containing white powder. Interestingly nothing has hit the major news services yet. Was it just an exercise? Or is it one of those events where the news feed needs to be carefully edited?

What’s Your opinion?

def not a training exercise, someone found a packet of white powder substance at the front, people were evacuated for 3+ hours, of course turned out to be a false alarm. Found it interesting there was absolutely nothing mentioned on any of the news websites.

“Also most of the high end drills are usually announced to the public a day beforehand so as not to cause scare to the public.”

True. And if the drill was going to require that one or more major roads be blocked off, then there would certainly be forewarning. As it was, part of Mort St (1 block) was blocked off. Yet no warning to motorists.

As for people wandering in and out of the building – don’t forget that the AFP Headquarters is one of 3 office buildings on that block. What people may have seen is workers entering the ATSB building right next door. If it was a white-powder incident with no risk of explosives involved, and the buildings have totally separated air-conditioning systems, then there would be no need to prevent regular activity in those buildings, provided the AFP mailroom had good containment procedures – which in the current climeate, you would expect that they would.

Even so, if it was a training exercise, the success of such events is usually lauded across the news services that night, just to keep the public confidence up. Yet this didn’t even rate a mention in this mornings paper.

A drill would not have had the ACT FB Commander Delta 10 doing work ….

If it happens in a real proceedure, shouldn’t it happen in drills too? Otherwise, why have the drill?

Yeah but if it was a drill would the command be overseeing it all with the other staff? Cause it seemed they were doing the work as they were understaffed.

Strangely nothing on ABC. Has there been any media coverage? CT? Win?

Oh and the camera was the AFP Media and also WIN news rocked up for a few minutes but didn’t catch too much of the action.

I watched the whole thing!

I asked one of the hazmat guys if it was a drill and he said “no mate, its the real deal”.

2 Men in Bio-Hazard suits entered the basement where the mailroom is and spent some time down there, later they came back out with a container sealed by a ziplock bag got hosed down with all the detergents and stuff they use then washed by the hazmat shower. Then placed the ziplock back containing what can be thought to be put in a container being powder into a big barrel which was airtightly sealed and placed in the back of a police vehicle obviously to be taken away for testing.

A drill would not have had the ACT FB Commander Delta 10 doing work nor the Regional Ambulance Command taking reports and also doing work. Also most of the high end drills are usually announced to the public a day beforehand so as not to cause scare to the public.

To me it looked an operation well done. Soooo kudos to the guys and gals that were involved.

All clear from here.

1545.

M1ckx 4:25 pm 10 Apr 08

1500 – Incident appears to be clear – no emergency vehicles what so ever.

However, colleagues reported seeing people being stretchered away on oxygen, and some office workers separated behind tape away from others. Could just be precautions.

A TV like camera was seen in the vacinity – but no logo to identify station.

Mort St ???

Tempestas 4:18 pm 10 Apr 08

Rumours floating around Mort St confirm the “package containing a white powder” is the cause of events.

Of course until we see something more official a rumour is just that.
