The Australian Federal Police Association has sent its members a message saying how much they love the Liberals’ proposal to increase the penalties for assaulting police.

In late May 2011 an AFPA member advised the AFPA that as a result of ACT DPP advice, the specific Commonwealth offence for assaulting an AFP Member is now not being used within the ACT jurisdiction.

The AFPA has been seeking support from the ACT Government and Liberal Opposition to amend ACT legislation and we welcome the initiative of the ACT Liberals to move to amend current legislation. The AFPA is now seeking a bipartisan approach to this important legislative reform.

I don’t see how this will make any difference. Does anyone really think that a dopey crim is going to think that they better not threaten to kill that copper because the maximum sentence is now 13 years rather than 10.

Seconded and remember nobody gets the maximum sentence here anyway.

Fail

David Harold Eastman….life for murder.

That was an extra-ordinary case. Among other things the trial lasted 5 months during which Eastman did as much as was humanly possible to damage his case. And that’s the only one you can come up with? As a general principle my statement stands

By the way, what is the revelation here? The Police Association supports proposed tougher penalties for assaults against Police. I mean, what did you expect them to do…..not support it?

A bit like reporting ‘the workers are supporting a 100% pay increase’. No shit Sherlock

Big +1

Zed was on the radio yesterday morning talking about how important these changes are following recent events involving police. The only actual incident he mentioned was the police officer who stayed with the girl that had the fake bomb attached to her, in Sydney, wtf????

‘Everyone’…….? ‘Everyone’ what….?

The good news for me was that they are taking the assault of an AFP Officer more seriously than they have been.
