Patience, as much as ability, counts for plenty in motorsport. Canberra Supercar driver Cameron Hill proved on the weekend that he has both in spades.

Cameron’s maiden victory in the fifth race in the Supercars on Friday night as a prelude to the Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park is a testament to the skills required to succeed in the Supercars.

This was, after all, his 58th start.

In his 57th race, he finished on the podium for the first time after finishing third in the fourth race of the season in Melbourne.

Twenty-four hours later, Hill had overtaken pole-positioned Broc Feeney at the first turn to lay the platform for his maiden win in a shortened race after the safety car had to be deployed twice during the event.

There was added cause for celebration within the Matt Stone Racing team, with Cameron’s teammate Nick Percat completing a quinella for MSR with a second-place finish.

With Matt Stone Racing dominating the podium for Race 5, Cameron was provided with an opportunity to reflect on the hours put in to get to this point.

He had toiled for years in carts and support series before getting an opportunity in the Supercars. Fifty-eight races later, the hard work paid dividends.

“You can say I’ve been working towards this for a long time,” Cameron said.

“I just had a good feeling about today. I was so nervous before the race because I recognised the fact that if we could get off the line, we could get the win today.”

And Cameron couldn’t help but reflect on his feelings for the racing team and their shared success.

“Unbelievable, one-two; a one-two for MSR! It’s so cool. Credit to them. They’ve just put so much work in, and they deserve this.”

Cameron finished the weekend in 8th position in the drivers’ standings after a 10th placing on Saturday.

The series now heads to New Zealand for the Taupō 440 in April.
