AHA complains too many pubs in Canberra

The Australian Hotels Association has told the ABC that it is too easy to get a liquor license in Canberra and that as a result there are too many “outlets” here.

Spokesman Michael Capezio said the checks on license-holders’ suitability are inadequate.

He also doesn’t think that promotions for cheap drinks and so on are “not conducive to both responsible consumption of alcohol, which we think is a responsibility for the customer to adhere to, and responsible service”.

I wonder what prompted this outburst. Too many pubs and clubs that aren’t AHA members? Or do they all have to be members?

Can never be too many bars and pubs. Great site to find Canberra venues is to check out CheapDrinks.com.au – new site.

More Pubs free beer on random week nights and more live music. Compulsory Irish dancing and beer pulling lessons at school.

Thats got to be the biggest load of shit I have heard for along time. I recon we need more pubs. Go to Scotland or Ireland and look at the amount of pubs they have there and its a very social and great way to meet your neibours. And you can walk down to your street and have a quiet beer and chat with friends instead of going to a silly club full of poker machines.
I lived in Cork for 2 years and within 10 mins of my apartment I had access to I guess more then 50 pubs haha lol

2 sad facts
1.there are a few ( few as in not many)interesting establishments across Canberra
2. once smoking is banned, they are going to have to rely on their musical atmosphere rather than their (arguably more popular, defining) cancerous, smokey one: anyone care to punt on the fate of, say, Phoenix, Potbelly, Petes, Toast, Greenroom????
3. I want a REAL beer garden!!!!

The Phoenix and Wig n’ Pen are the only ‘real’ pubs in the city, anything else is just a booze barn.

Love the ‘pension deprivation facility’, if you’re mug stupid enough to enter those establishments to give your money to the big four or the Labour Party then so be it.

erewego: Agreed! In Civic, you can count the pubs on less than a hand: Phoenix, Wig and Pen, the Uni Bar…er…running out of names already. And no, King O’Crapski’s is NOT a pub!

Discerning patrons agree: too many shite venues in Civic centre.
For our influx of students, and temporary residents from Sydney and Melbourne, it is easy to mistakenly enter one of civic’s charmless and lack-lustre establishments, or some lame plastic-paddy. These establishments reflect poorly on the cultural life of Canberra, and reinforce negative stereotypes about the capital. Combined with the proliferation of “family” clubs (Pokie-ridden pensioner entertainment and pension-depravation facilities) that infest Canberra’s suburbs, an entertaining night out in the capital is not something that one can rely on to encounter by chance.
So some support from me for Mr Capezio re: inadequate licensing checks, but mostly because 1/2 the bars ALL the clubs and most of the ‘community’ clubs provide such a disinteresting facility so devoid of innovation, talent, flare or atmosphere, that I am only really able to recommend drinking at the bowlo, in the arvo.
