The owners of Canberra Airport are set to become the ACT Government’s landlords after winning the tender to build and own a major new office complex for Territory public servants along with a boutique hotel, childcare centre and cafe complex on the site of the carpark adjacent to the Legislative Assembly in Civic.
The Government announced today that of the six companies that pitched for the project, Capital Property Group, owned by the Snow family, was its preferred tenderer.
The Government plans to substantially consolidate its policy and administrative functions under one roof on the site, with 1,700 ACT public servants expected to work in the new office building by October 2020. The 20,000 square metre building will be owned and built by the private sector but leased by the ACT Government for 20 years, with a further five year option for extension.
Capital Property Group (CPG) is the developer behind the airport’s national and international terminals, Brindabella Business Park and the Vibe Hotel as well as the Snow Centre for Education in the Asian Century at Canberra Grammar School in Red Hill.
CPG is also developing the new suburb of Denman Prospect through its Capital Estate Developments Pty Ltd arm. When it won the tender for that project, managing director Steven Byron said the company wanted to be part of making Canberra the best capital in Australia.
“We are a family-owned Canberra organisation with our roots back to the foundation of Canberra,” he said.
“In fact my great grandfather opened Canberra’s first general store, ‘Snows’, in the Sydney Building in Civic in the 1930s. We are passionate about Canberra and about continuing to make it Australia’s most liveable, vibrant city.”
This latest project to redevelop the site at Block 35, Section 100, Civic will include basement public parking, street level cafes and landscaped plazas.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the Government had received six “high quality, innovative and financially attractive” proposals from the shortlisted tenderers.
“The CPG proposal presented excellent value for money by balancing a competitive financial offer with a design scheme that is elegant in urban, architectural and interior design terms,” he said.
He emphasised the fact that CPG was a local company that employed local contractors and suppliers.
