The owners of Canberra Airport are set to become the ACT Government’s landlords after winning the tender to build and own a major new office complex for Territory public servants along with a boutique hotel, childcare centre and cafe complex on the site of the carpark adjacent to the Legislative Assembly in Civic.

The Government announced today that of the six companies that pitched for the project, Capital Property Group, owned by the Snow family, was its preferred tenderer.

The Government plans to substantially consolidate its policy and administrative functions under one roof on the site, with 1,700 ACT public servants expected to work in the new office building by October 2020. The 20,000 square metre building will be owned and built by the private sector but leased by the ACT Government for 20 years, with a further five year option for extension.

Capital Property Group (CPG) is the developer behind the airport’s national and international terminals, Brindabella Business Park and the Vibe Hotel as well as the Snow Centre for Education in the Asian Century at Canberra Grammar School in Red Hill.

CPG is also developing the new suburb of Denman Prospect through its Capital Estate Developments Pty Ltd arm. When it won the tender for that project, managing director Steven Byron said the company wanted to be part of making Canberra the best capital in Australia.

“We are a family-owned Canberra organisation with our roots back to the foundation of Canberra,” he said.

“In fact my great grandfather opened Canberra’s first general store, ‘Snows’, in the Sydney Building in Civic in the 1930s. We are passionate about Canberra and about continuing to make it Australia’s most liveable, vibrant city.”

This latest project to redevelop the site at Block 35, Section 100, Civic will include basement public parking, street level cafes and landscaped plazas.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the Government had received six “high quality, innovative and financially attractive” proposals from the shortlisted tenderers.

“The CPG proposal presented excellent value for money by balancing a competitive financial offer with a design scheme that is elegant in urban, architectural and interior design terms,” he said.

He emphasised the fact that CPG was a local company that employed local contractors and suppliers.

So this carpark will be a construction site, whilst the one on the other side of Northbourne Ave will be the depot for the tram construction. Gonna be chaotic parking in Civic for many years to come. Perhaps the inconvenience will push more people onto public transport.

They (Cap Metro) aren’t using that car-park anymore.

At all? I thought they were only using half of it?

Worst part is that of all of Canberra the ACT government just took some real-estate off the market in probably one of the most in demand locations so that public servants can work together.
Surely Somewhere like Woden or further out of civic would be far cheaper in terms of rent and cost.

Now even though the rent paid would come back to the government the loss of income would be a factor. Someone else can’t have that land and one extra business might chose not to locate in Canberra because of it.

Given the light rail was organised that it would be light rail and the route chosen rather than go to ‘tender’ for a transport solution, one would that think the snows won the contract at the surprise of the government.

Now the interesting part is what we’re going to do with all the soon to be vacant office spaces around Canberra that the mishmash of government current take up.

There should be savings come about by the centralised all in one location setup. The fact that they aren’t cheering the savings means there probably isn’t any?

About the number of parking spaces. New office means new employees. If there isn’t an increase in parking spaces there is a loss to the community who now find it harder given slashed public transport options and slashed parking spaces. There would be zero chance of having a stadium in civic.

Bit less Civic parking goes down the gurgle.

CT article stated there was going to be slightly more public parking than before.

What. Are. The. Chances.

Ten weeks out of an election, and a mega-project for a Canberra powerbroker gets approved, with guaranteed revenues from ACT residents funnelled straight to the Snows via the ACT Government’s guaranteed tenancy.

Not sure your comment makes much sense. No love lost between the ACT Govt and the Snows. I’m more surprised they got it than if the job had gone to someone else.

I wonder if the parking fees will be similar to those of the airport?
