Airport Transfer with Kids?

Hi, I’m looking for a solution to the problem of how to get my partner and young kids (2 + 4) to the airport at 6am in the morning?

Presumably a taxi is out of the question as they won’t have car seats available?

6am is too early for the buses to be running from Belconnen. Thanks.

We used a limo company, they seem to be more accomodating (and reliable) with child seats. We got a stretch limo which was alot cheaper than 2 taxi’s. We had 4 adults and 2 kids under 4.

You could still use one of these…this one is at Toronto Pearson Airport…far more difficult to get to than Canberra’s small airport. http://instagram.com/p/SCMIiFOaqy/

Ask a friend or neighbour to come along with you in your car and then have them drive your vehicle home.

Thanks for all the suggestions folk.. much appreciated.

You could drop your family off, drive home and then take a taxi back to the airport. That’s what I’d write if this was in one of those logic puzzle books.

Or yeah, longstay parking.

Time to cash in a friend favour. Even if it costs you a case of beer or a few bottles of wine it sounds like it will be worth it for peace of mind. At the prices a taxi charges you’d nearly get me out of bed and into the fully equipped Tarago at that hour of the morning (if only taxi plates weren’t so damn expensive).

you may request a car seat, but don’t expect one to actually turn up; from my experience. some [most?] have the seat belt attachment for kids but this is pretty useless for small kids (that is, those who need rear-facing seats).

This. And the one time that we at least got the seatbelt attachment, it was broken.

I know I’m a worry-guts, but that is just crazy. Insist on booking a taxi with a capsule. Or you could purchase an extra capsule and ask that they let you put it in. Just a small nudge and baby is out the window. Or at least into it.

I would recommend the long stay car park option too. We do that a fair bit. Cheaper than cabs in the end plus more convenient. The other option is Hire Cars rather than taxis. We use a limo service in Melbourne, just book ahead and ask for car seat. Great service, meet you at the baggage carousel and help with bags!

Try CBD Transport, a limo/hire car company might be a good option. They can carry kiddies for an extra charge. I tend to pre-booked them for early morning airport runs. Taxis in Canberra are notoriously unreliable, I have had too many taxi no-shows at 5am to trust them any more. The transfer with CBD is only slightly more than a cab fare, you get a clean, non-spew smelling car and a driver that can communicate with other sapient beings and has at least a rudimentary knowledge of the road rules.

I park for up to a week at the airport. $102 vs two $55-$60 cab fares…. Thats a working week. Cab fare depends on where you live, I imagine there must be people in the far reaches of the suburbs that pay more than me for a cab fare.

I’m sure you could find a friend willing to drop you in and look after your car and collect you at the end of your trip

and: I was advised not that long ago that people travelling in children in taxis are exempt from the booster/child seat requirement.

i picture the kuato character from arnie’s ‘total recall’ – people really shouldn’t travel in children… 🙂

I was advised not that long ago that people travelling in children in taxis are exempt from the booster/child seat requirement. Check out this site for clarification on state by state requirements. ACT says no specific requirement although they must be able to fit at least one seat.Just depends on how safe you feel. Me, wouldn’t be crazy about it to be honest, given the way that taxi drivers hare about!

Check out the long stay parking fees. We’ve found that it’s often been cheaper to park there than to take a taxi there and back. And that way, we don’t have to worry about car seats etc for the kids either.
