Last night The Greens’ Alan Kerlin (Molonglo) rode his bike down to O’Connor’s Duxton and had a go at our candidate challenge for the 2012 election (Al is also well known in this parish as “Gungahlin Al”).

I’ve been waiting to see a candidate work to a different scale and aside from his towering astronomer Al obliged with a different way of doing things.

Al’s priorities included: Satellite cities, light rail, pedestrian zones, high rise accommodation, stepped density, mixed use zones, green belts, progressive lowering of urban density, buses complementing light rail, backyards not just for millionaires, distinct communities, the bunyip for Gungahlin, a cinema in Gungahlin, shared pedestrian zones, casual surveillance, axe wielding wookies to deal with Joe Hockey, restoration of astronomy on Mount Stromlo, and reduction of inefficient street lighting in Canberra

But don’t take my word for it, he explains all in the video.

The next one, as part of our Green patch, Johnathan Davis (Green for Brindabella) at Tuggeranong’s Ojo in from 6.00pm on Thursday 30 August. The public are both welcome and encouraged to come out and join in the fun.

(Candidates who haven’t slotted themselves in are advised that there will be no candidate challenges after 28 September and we need a week’s notice, so they better get in quick, and should email john@the-riotact.com )

Here’s our nifty calendar, you the public are reminded that you’re very welcome to come along to these things:

I disagree with the notion that you need to have shared zones in place of pedestrian streets/malls. It is only in counties like Australia and the US where pedestrians streets haven’t fared so well. Usually because silly governments/councils allow mega shopping malls to be built in close proximity thus taking pedestrian traffic away.

Most European countries that have pedestrian streets are thriving and have increased the size of pedestrian areas in city centres and other smaller towns. http://vimeo.com/13826541

If i was planning a town from Lego it would look like this…….. http://youtu.be/oafMXRcsid0

Great night had by all. It was a pleasure meeting you Poetix 🙂
GungahlinAl, those uber cool sunnies would be mine. I would lose my head were it not attached to my body 😛

Cheers. My Council town planning background meant it was a given I’d be taking a more high-level strategic perspective.
I neglected to mention on tape – see how most of the larger buildings have continuous colonading – because the often-overlooked weather protection is important in design of pedestrian-friendly town centres! There was a community garden in there too, and buses connecting suburbs to the trunk light rail routes.

It was a lot of fun, although there seemed to be a pretty interesting conversation going on over with John, John, Jazz and Poetix that I couldn’t really hear any of…

Poetix: I found a pair of sunnies left behind and have them, figuring they are yours? Working in Moore St presently if that’s convenient for a pickup?

My ‘über-cool’ sunnies are perched on my head as we speak. Thanks, but perhaps hand them in to Duxton? Cheers.

The highlight of last night’s event for me was chatting to Johnathon Davis. I wonder if he’ll be able to stop talking long enough on Thursday to actually build anything? (-:

Ideas appear well thought out and well presented as well, I put this on par with the Labour guys performace last week so far.

I agree. This is the best articulated vision we’ve seen yet after Mark K’s.
