Hi All,

Just bought my first Alfa Romeo, and I’m quite excited.

Can anyone recommend a good Alfa Romeo service agent in Canberra? A google search only brings up the dealer here, but I was hoping for something… more.

Cheers.

Alfa Romeo? Service?

Don’t waste your time – if rumours have any truth, most Alfa Romeos are rusted out before the first service falls due.

That was close to the truth about Alfas of the 70s and 80s, but no longer the case. It used to be said that when buying an Alfa you paid for the motor and chassis – the rest was thrown in for free. Soviet-sourced steel with a high sulphur content (apparently) and minimal rustproofing as well as time spent languishing on the docks in Italy due to labour strikes are all reasons I’ve heard for their amazing ability to rapidly succumb to the laws of entropy.

Modern Alfas don’t rust, but they perhaps lack a bit of the character and charm of the oldies. Although I wouldn’t mind a new Giulietta 1750 QV in white. Hubba hubba!

He used to service my Alfasud and Audi, but now just services my dear Camry, sigh…

Are you sure that’s not Chris Hedges?

Yes – I meant Chris!

Another thumbs up for Chris Hedges.

Chris Hedges in Maryborough St has a good reputation and is a lovely bloke to boot.

Chris Hedges…He’s highly spoken of in Alfa world.

Has serviced all my brother’s Alfa’s and he’s had a few…
Alfa’s are good if you get the older ones..105 etc. I think you mean FIATs…. Fix it Again Tony (sorry had to go there).

If I could put my foot on the clutch without catching the brake pedal….I might think about it…..

Moro Motors in Mitchell. Fernando knows his stuff, really cares, and doesn’t overcharge. He might shout at you for a while, but once he calms down he’s a good guy.

And congratulations on getting your Alfa. Let’s hope the good times outweigh the bad. At least it will never be boring!

I’ve had a few and look back on them as memorable affairs – feeling a little guilty that I’ve moved on but remembering those delightful illicit relationships. You can’t have a passive relationship with an Alfa – you must be prepared to buy a bit of lap time somewhere and give that girl some relentless passionate driving!

Whoever you find, better put them on speeddial.

And ensure they do home visits! 🙂

Like they say, you can never be considered a true car enthusiast until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo. I guess only at rue enthusiast would put up with the crap that an Alfa dishes out. I’ve been chasing electrical gremlins in my 10 year old 156. I’d be annoyed but given that I paid $150 for a car that sold new for $65,000 I’m willing to be a bit forgiving.

buys first alfa

does not know enough about cars to perform own service, nor presumably to tear down a motor, diagnose and fix electrical gremlines or weld rust patches into floorpans

in for a world of hurt

Oh I don’t know about that. I owned a little Alfasud in my youth and it’s still the car I loved the most.

… but I did learn more than I wanted to about Italian ‘engineering’

Whoever you find, better put them on speeddial.

There is a reason why people do not specialise in Alfas. It is because they are shite to work on, shite to drive, shite for reliability, shite to get parts for, and any parts you can find will be seriously overpriced.

If it is insured, set fire to it right now and walk away now while you still can.

Except for those workshops that… y’know, do specialise in Alfas….

I’ll agree with you when it comes to the 159 and Brera, but earlier ones are great to drive.

But, as with all cars pretty much, the best Alfas were made in the 60’s.

Don’t know about that. The GTV was quite a sort-after car in the early 1980s.

Do your self a favour and sell it before it sends you broke
