Ali Baba Aussie Pack. $10 lunch review

aussie pack

In the recent discussion of Canberrans’ attitudes to Muslims the question was asked “What do Muslims think of Canberrans?”

One could interpret the Ali Baba “Aussie Pack” as the answer to that question.

Today I returned to the foodcourt under Dendy to try it out.

On approaching the counter and requesting this abomination I was asked what meat I’d like with it.

“Can I get a mix of all three?”

“Sure”

Chips were thrown into a fryer and I waited.

What sauce would I like? Well if it’s an Aussie Pack it needs to be BBQ right?

Eventually a spiffy cardboard box was thrust across the counter (a box complete with a request that I friend them on Facebook).

So what did I get for $8.90?

Dry doner meat, BBQ sauce, and chips. (the mix of all three having gone by the wayside somewhere in the process).

It was the most revolting lunch I’ve had in quite some time.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

Many aeons ago, in my university days, I used to work for a Lebanese restaurant in the city bus interchange called Sinbads – to my mind, it still sets the standard for me for great Lebanese style food.

Ah, Sinbads, what a cracker of a restaurant. It had good food AND amazing atmosphere, we used to have drunken team dinners there very regularly.

You weren’t a member of the ANU hockey club by any chance….many a Sunday night turned into a late one thanks to the ANU hockey folk LOL…..

The kebabs from the kebab joint at Yarralumla shops are excellent, the filling is just normal stuff and they do pack heaps of it in, but the wrap part they use is really good.

You do need to eat them straightaway, I got one to go one time and ate it after driving back to work and it wasn’t nearly as good, although still better than AB IMHO.

It’s been a while since I have been there but I think they were just under 10 bucks a hit

Dear god, how to ruin good food. Chips and sliced kebab are foods of the gods but not together. BBQ sauce is inedible at the best of times, but on sliced kebab?! This is evil.

Please take the photo off the front page. It’s making me feel ill.

Ali Baba used to do a chicken peri-peri kebab which wasn’t bad, but I can’t recall any time in the last three years when I’ve eaten a kebab sober.

PS: The pictured ‘meal’ looks absolutely disgusting, like a heart attack waiting to happen.

I have an “Ali Baba’s” falafel roll on a regular basis, very good value.

have to disagree, the falafel roll is bloody ordinary compared to the quality of 10 years ago though. dry and tasteless.

Muslims? how do you know they’re not, eg, Lebanese Christians? George W Bush seemed incapable of distinguishing between ethnic and religious categories, but that’s no excuse for the rest of humanity.

AliBaba has been going downhill for years. The further they’ve taken the food away from its middle-eastern origins, the worse it’s got. Now it’s bland and uninteresting. As discussed on previous threads, that’s been the price you pay for them trying to go mainstream.

Ali Baba? If you entered the store, you got what you deserved. Too bad Star Kebab isn’t in Civic.

That is, I must say, some nasty looking nastiness.

Could this be the true progentitor of the Cronulla riots?

Is that what you are suggesting?

Haha, good on you for taking one for the team.

What do you expect!! I’m sure there are much better Kebab places in Civic. PS: Good on you for finally posting a bad review!

Are you sure that was meat in the cardboard box and not random strips of rubber JB?

ali baba; and you didn’t go for a kebab? chips, at a kebab shop? and you wonder why it was shiite?
