Went to see Alice play last night at the AIS Arena here in Canberra. Given that it is a basketball/netball/volleyball stadium we wondered if Alice or the sports were sponsored by Dencorub and Gatorade 😉

The support band were called Six Hours. They were competent but boring. We thought they could’ve been renamed Matchbox 15 or Half-Live. Very derivative and nothing original. Their singer looked like Keith Urban and we’re not sure if that is good or bad.

Alice was LOUD. Often the mix had way too much top end in ot making it harsh. Ear plugs fixed that (I am OLD!). He played all his standards (set list at the end) and did the whole stage show – he was hanged (hung?) at the gallows – the whole nine yards. His band (including Eminem’s bass player I am told) were awesome – very tight and very energetic. The high point for me was probably when Alice was off stage and the two guitarists and the drummer were all playing the drums along with the bass player. That is not to take away from Alice, but this was different and fairly groovy really.

Best song…..hard to say…but there was one dud. Poison. I remember it from the early 90’s (or was it ’89). It was the closing number and it really just didn’t stack up to anything else he played. It was really one dimensional compared to the rest.

So….all in all a great gig – see him now if he comes your way. Alice is 59….

It was a great gig.

I dont know if I would call the support band completely boring, but listening closely, I could recoginse about a dozen “classic” riffs that they seem to have borrowed/used/stolen. I thought that the best thing they did was “Children of the Revolution” and that was a simple note by note cover.

I agree about the venue accoustics and it was shown moreso in the support band than in Alice’s set (but I think that was more about equiptment used).

Highlight for me was the “Welcome to My Nightmare” section.

Thanks for posting the setlist. I was also at the Canberra concert and thought it absolutely rocked. Alice is a cool bloke, great musician and great entertainer. It was a very entertaining show and I loved the theatrics. The song I enjoyed the most was probably “No more Mr Nice guy” but the drum and bass solo was also awesome. The whole concert kicked arse, especially the guitarists.

The only pity is that venue isn’t really up to such concerts. The AIS arena is built for basketball not sound and the seating is a bit uncomfortable as it doesn’t face the stage. I saw Van Halen there in 1998 and it was the same. I shouldn’t complain though as we’re lucky to have somebody like Alice take the time to come tour Australia and even give Canberrra a go. I only wish other bands like Iron Maiden would take a leaf out of his book.

Alice rules!

Damn I missed that one. I hear that Suzie Quatro is also coming up soon.

I’m sure Alice would have got a round in at Royal Canberra while he was in town.
