Alicia's fight for life

AlicaHi RA, been a while since I’ve posted here but I’ve certainly been lurking from time to time. Great to see very little has changed 🙂

I’m hoping I’ve caught some of you in a generous mood as I’m about to do something I’ve never done before… that is, reach out to the internet and ask for donations.

A childhood friend of mine who grew up in Weston Creek has recently been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. She’s in her late 20’s, and her prognosis is not good.

A treatment offered in Germany has given her a ray of hope, however the treatment is expensive, hence the requests for donations.

Please take a moment to read about Alicia’s fight at the website her family has created. If you feel compelled to donate, even a dollar or two, every little bit will count and will be greatly appreciated.

http://www.aliciasfight.com

Thanks in advance RiotACT.

Alex.

There is an update on the Facebook page. Dunno about anyone else, but I’d be grasping at straws and seeking treatment in Germany if I was in Alicia’s shoes. I hope it works, even if it’s a placebo thing.

Digging a bit, I reckon the treatment they are looking at is,

Still in clinical trials in the US, approved for use in Germany, in this case at this clinic:
http://www.germancancertreatments.com/treatments-at-hallwang-clinic/

Looks like a fair-dinkum evidence-based medical centre, although it doesn’t seem to discourage its patients belief in variuous jumbo-jumbos, and even supports their irrational belief by calling their chemotherapies “bio-” therapies.

Expensive though, especially when you’re just paying for experimental medicine that doesn’t seem to hold out much in the way of hope for people who are that desperate they are willing to try it.

I would much rather my taxes were spent on developing effective therapies and providing them under medicare than in giving Rupert Murdoch billion-dollar windfalls. Or tax breaks for billionaires who make their money by doing nothing more useful than digging up Australian rocks and selling them to the Chinese.

So, on this thread you have shifted your opinion from ”sounds like a scam’ to ‘sounds like a dodgy foreign doctor’ and now the best you’ve got is ‘expensive’ and some bizarre political rant involving Murdoch.

Why don’t you go away and come back when you’ve made a final decision as to why she’s not getting any of YOUR money. Or better still, go away and don’t come back at all.

I doubt anybody is particularly interested in your thought processes.

It’s called being sceptical and seeking to be informed. If people want to start begging for money, they better expect a bit of scrutiny.

here’s a facebook page and it doesn’t look scammy in the least. As fundraisers go, if people are prepared to donate and it’s genuine – albeit misguided – I don’t see how this all warrants nastiness…But calling Alicia’s supporters scammers is really low. Let it be on your conscience whether you spared a thought for the poor thing, or made a mockery of her.

You can look up on the internet, AFP had report somewhere that it is people like you, very gullible, who fall for scams. In 2013, there are plenty of wankers who believed that “Windows technical support” genuinely called them and offered to fix their machines. Almost 100K were “fleeced”, amounts ranging from $20 to almost 1K (average-just under 300). I think AFP were planning on publishing report.

Here’s another old, but interesting one:

So it always pays to check before supporting any claims.

LOL @ a white supremacist calling anybody a desperate dumb loser.

Give your self a uppercut.

Who IS AliciasFlight.com? The suspicions were enough for me to look into it a bit further. First, the domain lookups for aliciasflight.org don’t mean anything, since that is not the domain in question!

1. Go to http://www.whois.com/whois/aliciasfight.com
You will see the domain is registered to Amanda Johnson, with contact details referring to Amanda Johnson. If you ring the mobile phone number listed, it is voicemail for one Carl Johnson, in Clear Island Waters QLD (aka Surfers Paradise West).
2. The domain of the email address for the domain is at carljohnson.com.au but that site appears to be email-only, no web pages. Last update, according to whois, was 18/9/2013. The carljohnson.com.au domain name is registered to RASKIN PTY LTD, which also has a postcode of 4226 (Clear Island Waters, QLD).
3. The aliciasflight.com website does not display any contact address or anything suggesting it is a registered charity. Nothing on the site indicates place of residence.

Even if the entire thing is legit, there is a problem. There is no entity matching the bank account name given on the donations page, and if Carl and Amanda are indeed Alicia’s parents, they obviously already know enough about business law etc to do it right.

You have to look further down the donations page to see where it says “If you want a tax deductible receipt…donate through our charity Janelle’s Miracle”. ASIC search turns up a matching registered charity based in Victoria, although web-savvy people will tell you 75% or more already did the donation at the previous steps and never went that far.

Sorry Alicia, if you are truly ill, but this all looks very fishy, as in surrounded by canals, and I am sure the ATO is going to get involved at some point. There is probably already an ATO man in a sentry box on your street.

Wouldn’t all those “Johnsons” be Alicia’s family? Is she not “Alicia Johnson”? Are you expecting the cancer patient to be running the fundraiser? Sheesh!

Sgt Bungers can you please look up your childhood friend’s family and see whether they can dispel these concerns? It is indeed looking unusual. Or, worse, not unusual.

Maybe Sgt Bungers is in on the ‘scam’?????

Anyway, maybe the parents should mortgage their property to pay for the German treatment…..

There’s a facebook page and it doesn’t look scammy in the least. As fundraisers go, if people are prepared to donate and it’s genuine – albeit misguided – I don’t see how this all warrants nastiness. Of course people will grasp at straws, and maybe there might even be a remission coincident with German scam treatment. Let’s hope so. But calling Alicia’s supporters scammers is really low. No wonder Sgt Bungers hasn’t posted again recently – this is all too hurtful and nasty. I just can’t see how Riotact’s “right of reply” should be accommodating vile posts in this context. There’s a girl dying here, folks! Let it be on your conscience whether you spared a thought for the poor thing, or made a mockery of her.

Chcek out the testimonials at “Janelles Miracle”:

“”When I realised that none of this is real, I began to return to complete health. Be educated not medicated.” ”
Dr Thomas Damico (‘terminal cancer’ survivor)
Doctor of natural medicine

Yep. Money-grubbing scum peddling false hope to sick people.

I was up the Gold Coast the past few days and noticed signs and bar staff wearing the AliciaFight in Burleigh Heads. A very sophisticated scam if it is. (Which I doubt).

No sh!t, sherlocks!?

Obviously a coincidence.

In other news,

“Unfortunately, the number of cancer fraud thieves is growing fast. These scammers are usually very good at creating compelling stories and tugging on heartstrings.

What to do:

Instead of donating to individuals who may be real cancer victims or cancer fraud thieves, consider donating instead to a larger organization like the American Cancer Society. You can make the contribution in the friend or family member’s name; however, this will most likely not offset medical expenses for that person.

You may also be able to give to the hospital where the person is receiving cancer treatments. Every hospital is different, so call before you make a contribution. Some hospitals will permit a family member to create an account that others can contribute to; sometimes these accounts can be used to offset medical bills for individual cancer patients.

If you’ve already donated and have since discovered that you’ve been a victim of cancer fraud, contact your local police. Many of these cases are successfully prosecuted. Visit our charity fraud page for more information.

Sorry Alicia, if you are truly ill, but this all looks very fishy, as in surrounded by canals, and I am sure the ATO is going to get involved at some point. There is probably already an ATO man in a sentry box on your street.

Might I point out that when in doubt check. I really can’t be bothered but anyone wanting to give should do more checking first. I got one of those where the scammer had taken over a friend’s email address and sent “I am overseas and my uncle’s best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s mother needs an operation” and using Western Union for payment. Don’t. Anything Western Union or cash pick up style money transfer then you are a sucker. Even credit cards – the scammer works on percentages and most people aren’t prepared to spend the time claiming back from their credit company for small amounts. So 10, 20, 100, and more people giving five bucks = an excellent return. Plus you have given them your credit card details.

In my case the ostensible address was in Manchester but I lead them on and got the ‘doctor’s’ name and hospital. Phoning is so cheap (Skype) so I rang the hospital to find no such doctor. Lead them on a bit more (I am really pleased at how I did this) and got a genuine bank account number in southern England. After trying to get some police interest, both here and in the U.K. I gave up.

Scam support sites are incredibly useless, lots of advice, take your name so we know the size of the operation but we will do nothing. Federal police don’t even bother to tell you they are transferring your call outside of the police system to one of the scam reporting sites – useless. However, I am still thinking, Capone example, of contacting the U.K. tax office as I am sure they would be interested as this guy must be making lots from multiple donors.

“The clinic offers advanced technology and treatments not available in Australia, applying a holistic individualised approach that will give Alicia the best chance of surviving.” is all it says on website.
Anyone touched by cancer will understand the desperation and depression that can ensue.
There are a lot of clinical trials underway for different cancers (increasingly focussed on tumour sensitivity rather than location of tumour), usually with very tight enrollment requirements, including geography (see recent reports of David Murrell going for treatment to Norway where his father, by bizarre coincidence, was working on glioblastoma multiforme vaccines). Thus there may well be serious treatment options only accessible in Germany.
As others have noted, desperate people have often turned to dubious treatments or even quacks in these circumstances.
I await more details before donating, sympathy notwithstanding.

Yep, the term “holistic” is usually a buzzword for a range of therapies that are have either not been proven to work or proven not to work. Germany is a hot spot for the fraud that is homeopathy for example.

Also, standard treatments such as chemo and radio therapy are all individually tailored to the person and the condition. This is sounding more and more like caring, desperate people falling into the clutches of amoral charlatans. But I could be wrong…

My thougts were – could be a straight-up scam. Or, could be somebody who, in desperation, is falling for a “holistic” quack preying onm the sick. Or, given the flash website, could be somebody’s psychology assignment, not realising that they are breaking the law with this littel exercise.

Either way, you’d be a chump to be giving away money in the absence of any evidence that it will be used for anything useful.

This is indeed a problem. We all feel great sympathy for Alicia and I’m sure that everyone would want to help. The problem is that there are con artists who know this and who are quite willing to lie and cheat desperate, dying people and their families out of their life savings.

I’m sure that Alicia’s family would literally do anything to save her life. Unfortunately this may also include seeking treatments that if not fraudulent, are unproven and experimental only increasing Alicia’s misery and emptying her pockets.

So yes, I think it’s very important that we know what this mysterious, unnamed treatment is before contributing.

Many years ago while stoned off my a**, a good friend asked me a hypothetical question: Would I still find my super-hot girlfriend attractive if she shaved her head, or lost her hair to chemotherapy. That girlfriend is now my wife of over 10 years.

Now we have Alicia here, who’s (brave) selfie is now on RiotACT for all and sundry to see. If you look past the hair loss, do you see the young hot chick, who unfortunately also has cancer? Or is it only ugly chicks that get cancer? There was nothing sexual or degrading in my comment. It is *YOU* that is the disgrace if you cannot see the hot chick in the photo.

Coincidence?

Those of you who are skeptical, I completely understand. But I know Alicia, her family and Sgt. Bungers, and completely agree this is 100% legit. If you feel so moved to donate (and I understand either way if you do or do not), I know it would make a difference to Alicia’s chance of life.

I am unaware of what the treatment in Germany is at this stage, but I do know that from my father going through cancer treatment at the Canberra Hospital, that there were medical options in Europe that weren’t available here yet. A lot just through the fact that there were some medical technologies or techniques that just hadn’t gotten through Australian testing/approval yet. That was 3 years ago, but I’m not surprised that there is something over there that Alicia may not be able to recieve here yet.

Hi All, A few rounds of thanks to give out, First thanks to RA mods for approving the post and putting it on the front page. A huge thanks to anyone who may have made donations so far. Also a big thanks to Virgin Australia, Alicia’s former employer, for running a valentines day fund-raiser for her today. Pictures can be found via Facebook

Those of you who are sceptical, I don’t blame you. This is the internet after all, requests for money are rarely legit. To attempt to prove that this is real, I’ve also updated my own website with information about this donation campaign Link here.

If you’d like a tax deductible receipt for any donation you may make, you will receive one if you donate via Alicia’s Everyday Hero page.

Thanks all, I appreciate your time and generosity.

Alex.

I don’t doubt the legitimacy of the fundraising, but there are very few details regarding what the treatment in Germany actually is. I just hope it’s not alternative “medicine”.

If it isn’t, I’d be happy to donate next time I get paid.

I am amazingly sceptical of this one.

Don’t think its legit?

They should include her surname on the site . Just ‘Alicia’ could be anyone.

Took me all of 60-120 seconds to find her surname on the site.

Look again.

Shouldn’t take two minutes- that’s long enough for people to get sceptical. Should be a definite identified person straight up – there are so many fraudulent fundraiser sites all over the place.

So a surname on a website is your ultimate test of legitimacy for a charity? Do you sit with a stopwatch saying “Only 1 minute to find it so yes heres my credit card details”

What is the treatment available only in Germany?
(I did look on the linked website, but couldn’t find details).

Sceptical of Alicia’s story or of the treatment? I’m curious as to which and why?
