Alistair Coe growing old waiting for the parking strategy

It is a shame that Alistair Coe hasn’t done his homework on this issue and has failed to get up to date with the ACT Government’s parking policy which is contained in the Transport for Canberra Strategy, which I released with the Chief Minister about a month ago. The ACT Government has a clear policy on managing demand, which involves making sure parking spaces are available where they are needed like shopping centres, for parents taking children to appointments or short-stay spots near group and local centres and local grocery stores.

The Government is getting on with the job of delivering these measures by allocating $4m over the next four years to deliver new park and ride and bike and ride facilities in a range of locations around the city to provide free parking choices close to public transport links, and at the same time delivering more parking options like the new one in City West with approximately 1000 new parking spaces at the ANU Exchange development.

The important thing to remember is that parking is part of an overall public transport strategy and that is what the government is delivering for the Canberra community. It is a shame that the Canberra Liberals and Alistair Coe, feel it necessary to make spurious claims without doing their homework first and actually read policies that have been released publicly, as recently as one month ago.

Any strategy has to have a firm, stated aim… to make money, or to discourage cars, or whatever. And, it has to be made with full, accurate info on where the cars come from, and why. You can’t just make parking extortionate and expect the cars to disappear.
