Andrew Barr has let it be known that our ‘leccy prices are down down down compared to the competition.

In the report by CME – an energy economics consultancy focused on Australia’s electricity, gas and renewables markets – the ACT is ranked the cheapest of all jurisdictions in Australia and 21st out of 91 countries, states and provinces analysed.

A typical annual household electricity bill in the ACT is between $1,332 and $1,418. This is more than $1000 less than that faced by people living in NSW, where a typical annual household electricity bill is about $2,484.

Sadly he then goes on to justify this for his efforts to enrich homeowners at the expense of renters:

The Energy Efficiency (Cost of Living) Improvement Bill 2012 will benefit approximately 70,000 households in the ACT, requiring electricity retailers, such as ActewAGL, to provide free or subsidised services to households to boost the energy efficiency of their homes, and to provide ongoing energy bill savings of up to $300 per annum by 2015.

… but wasn’t there a report only last week saying that Australians have the highest retail electricity rates in the world, or something?

… so we’re the best house on the worst street? Great. Huzzah.

Electricity prices are still slightly below the OECD average, but are rising rapidly because we spend a lot on building and maintaining infrastructure to cater to ever-rising peak demand.

Most of the rise is because of the appreciating Australian Dollar.

Why political and media types always quote pure dollars with no mention of quantity of consumption? Are Canberrans using less power than NSWelshmen? Who can say from the press release (answer is that the actual report says ACT is at 17 cents per kWh vs NSW’s 25 cents).
