All kids to pay the same bus fare

Chief Minister Gallagher has decreed that kids in Oaks Estate and Hall will pay the same bus fare to get to school as everyone else.

“To ensure that all ACT students benefit from our reduced student fares when they travel to school, I have decided that those students who live in Oaks Estate and Hall should not be disadvantaged as a result of living in these villages that are within the ACT.

“This decision means that families who have paid for school term tickets to travel on Deane’s buses will be reimbursed the difference between ACT student fares and the Deane’s ticket prices from the date the new prices came into effect. This policy, which includes free travel for students who are eligible for the Student Transport Program, will also apply for any future fare increases and will take into account the ACTION student fare at that time,” the Chief Minister said.

The ACT Government, through the Territory and Municipal Services Directorate, expects to have the details of this new policy finalised by the end of September 2012, and will be in touch with Oaks Estate and Hall families about the process for the reimbursement of money that they have paid since the start of term 3 this year.

Good that the government got on board…

Seems a fairly fair fare.

This seems fare…

Oaks Estate residents have been waiting for a long time to achieve a simple, transparent and consistent approach to bus fare prices – pricing and easy access to a system that does not penalise or make it more diificult to what other ACT residents have.

The Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher in a former capacity went along way to cutting through the issues (cross border, differing serivice providers, intertia etc) in 2010.

However in 2012 Oaks Estae residents are still encountering iissues with the ‘arrangement’ and look forward to having these issues resolved. This would mean that our (limited) bus service would be more easily accesed and with fare parity.

It would also mean parents of children who would be eligible for free bus travel eleswhere in the ACT would be given access to the same travel entitlement that is available to other ACT residents.

Though given 52% of Oaks Estate residents are in ACT Housing assets and many are on low income having to first fund the considerable cost difference and then seek a reimbursement is likely to be a further unaffordable financial burden.

Given that the service to Oaks Estate is so limited, it is also critical that the scheduled bus arrives as per the posted time, not leaving children and fare paying adults, stranded on the literal edge of the ACT.

What’s the bet they’ll simply raise the prices for everyone else to match those for Oaks Estate residents

Unlikely, last time I checked, the Deanes fair was considerably higher than the ACTION equivelant.
