Territory And Municipal Services are warning that all the ACT Government’s sportsgrounds are going to be closed from 14 March to 27 March for restoration:

“To allow for the annual Autumn Sportsground Restoration Program all ACT Government sportsgrounds will be closed from Monday 14 March 2011 to Sunday 27 March 2011 inclusive,” said Mr O’Leary.

“Each year sportsgrounds are closed to formal sporting use as part of the restoration program giving the fields a much needed break following the wear and tear of summer sport.

“The program also allows for important maintenance operations to take place in preparation for winter
competitions.

“Spreading of fertiliser will assist turf going into winter dormancy and re-establishing density in cool
season grass varieties in readiness for the winter sport season.

“Other restoration activities include aeration, top dressing and over sowing which will ensure a full
cover of healthy turf is restored.

“Goal posts will be installed on all grounds, and back nets will be removed from the field of play for
winter sports. Field boundaries and markings will also be re-surveyed and marked prior to the start of
the winter season.

“The ACT Government recognises the importance of sportsgrounds in our community and is
committed to providing high quality playing surfaces in the ACT,” said Mr O’Leary.

Another seasonal shutdown is scheduled for 12 September to 25 September.

Football teams are already playing, and the season starts in about 5 weeks, throwing a bit of sand on the top now won’t help them. What they need is maintenance all year round.
