ACT Policing apprehended a 28-year-old man following negotiated surrender at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy last night (Monday, January 10).

Around 11.30pm police attended the tent embassy after a man and a woman flagged down AFP Protective Services Officers following an alleged assault and theft.

Witnesses said a man at the site threatened to shoot them. Police attended and set up a cordon around the man’s caravan.

ACT Policing’s Negotiators attended along with Specialist Response and Security members who, using the Armoured Rescue vehicle, negotiated the alleged offender’s surrender.

The offender allowed police to search his residence where they located items believed to have been taken in the theft and used in the alleged assault.

The man was arrested, taken to the ACT Watch House and later released on conditional Watch House bail.

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone who may be able to assist with the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

If you look at the records, Ayers Rock came long before Uluru

do you mean those records which indicate that it was named Ayers Rock in 1873 ?

I could be wrong, but something tells me that the local Pitjantjatjara people were calling it Uluru for oh, maybe just a few thousand years before that.

Do you have a source for that? Or are you just guessing?

My point is that the earliest records we have give the famous monolith the name of Ayers Rock. Certainly it must have been called various other names by the various locals before 1873, but we have no records of what those names were.

Right. So it’s all a fantasy, just as the rest of us have been saying.

A fantasy to you perhaps, but the Anangu creation myth is recognised in law, just as much of the Judeo-Christian mythology is too. The point being that the statement “it’s been called Uluru for thousands of years” is supported by anthropological and legal evidence.

Arguing with a racist is probably on par with arguing with a creationist or a flat-earther, there is really no point, they will refuse to see reason and will hold on to their discredited world view until the bitter end.

I’m sorry, but I fail to see why *my* ability to reason is in question when my interlocutor is the one brandishing irrational beliefs. Dix points for brandishing the “racist” tag in response to being called on innaccurate statements, though.

Just to be clear: the Anangu were *not* around *anywhere* “since creation”. It’s all a fantasy. Like the rest of us, the Anangu migrated to Australia at some stage and eventually ended up where they are now.

“January 26th is ‘Australia Day’ – the nation’s annual public holiday to commemorate the founding of the white Australian state.” http://london.indymedia.org/events/11356

“On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian. It’s the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It’s the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.” http://www.australiaday.org.au/australia-day/about-our-national-day.aspx

I prefer the second one.

I don’t know why it isn’t on here yet but I shall send johnboy some emails about it

The Tent Embassy will be celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Although the “protestors” and the protest have become irrelevant, this milestone should still be celebrated.

After the anniversary has been celebrated everyone at this eyesore should be moved on and the area reclaimed for everyones enjoyment.

When you are on their land/place I suggest you respect the laws of the three groups you mentioned. Its not that hard. Ever had a priest punch you?

Extremely unlikely – linguistic drift means a few centuries tops; assuming that they were the tribe in possession at the time (I don’t have the background info on the Arrernte language to judge whether there’s any truth to the claim that the Rock was given to the wrong tribe, so I’ll settle for pointing out that the dispute exists and leave it at that).

Not so, Whitelaughter. The land and Uluru belong to theUluru-Kata Tjuta Aboriginal Land Trust who hold it on behalf of the Anangu traditional owners. For the land to have been returned to them under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act they would need to have proved that they are the owners according to Aboriginal law and tradition. As far as the law, the Central Land Council, and traditional owners are concerned, ownership of Uluru is undisputed and non-controversial.

According to Anangu custom and tradition – which has been recognised by the law, hence the granting of the land – the Anangu have been at Uluru since creation. The word “Uluru” has no other meaning and, according to the Anangu, is the name the rock has had since creation.

When the Ngnnawal People went into the camp to protest, that’s their business. It’s not for us to comment

Not only is it our right to comment on things that happen in our community, I’d go so far as to say it’s our responsibility – if not to comment then at least to be aware and to have an opinion. What makes the activities of one group of people or another taboo?

Kerehona said :

we should just be quiet just out of respect.

For someone who throws the racist epithet around, you certainly make some comments that seem very akin to racism.

Respect? For what? Just because they’re Aborigines? Do I also have to respect the activities of Catholics just because they’re Catholics, or respect bikies just because they’re bikies?

We can respect people or groups for their actions. and we can respect those actions, but to suggest that we should respect people simply because of their membership of a group is ludicrous.

We can and should make every effort to right wrongs and injustices done to individuals or groups, but that’s respect for the principles of justice. People have to earn respect, it’s not something that’s just due to them.

And just in case you’re tempted – I have no idea who those people are or what they did. It’s entirely possible that, if I knew, I’d respect them or their actions. But because I don’t know, I have no basis for judgement one way or the other, do I?

I was bringing it up because people who resort those types of comments to make an argument probably shouldn’t be criticising the rest of us for how we supposedly treat people. I’ll knock it off, though.

Lets call it white settlement. In that time, off the top of my head, we had the South African camp site, French nuclear testing camp site, ADEX camp site and there will be others. Whilst the issues stayed so did the campers. Its a bit like when the first settlers came and camped on the local Corroboree place and decided it would make a good sheep station. They stayed too.

I really think it would do nothing for reconciliation to bulldoze the tent embassy and I believe the original intention and the fight of the founding members should be preserved, no matter who decides to visit the place.
It’s not about one or two dickheads camping there is it? Is it more deeper-seeded than that is it?

If I may, I made a short film…it might soften your perspective if you give it a chance.

Agree with Pork Hunt, may I add that sometime last year I saw an interview on ABC’s 7:30 Report, where they had an interview with some prominent aboriginals, and they said that most aboriginals do NOT support those who stay at the embassy now, as relevance had been lost, and they specifically said that those who reside at the Tent embassy were “leeches”.
So would Kerehona call those elders racist too? 🙂

How on earth does the Aboriginal tent embassy represent pride?
Are they proud to live in a shanty town that is barely tolerated by the authorities ?
Others may wish to comment on who the ‘authorities’ are.
Peoples of the Commonwealth have High Commissions as opposed to Embassies in Australia. I can only conclude that Aboriginals are not part of the Commonwealth.

It’s time the government showed some intestinal fortitude and moved them on.

The local Ngunnawal people don’t support the embassy either – From 2002 – “Local Ngunnawal tribe elders walked onto the grounds in front of the Old Parliament House around midday, put out a symbolic fire kept burning by the protesters and began tearing down the tents and makeshift huts that made up the site. One Ngunnawal elder, Matilda House, said the protest “had lost its way” and that its residents were just harassing tourists.

“They have turned it into a come-what-may, caravan camping place,” she said.”

I’d like to see Kerehona go and speak to the Ngunnawal and accuse them of being racist for wanting to tear it down.

Maybe we need to have a RiotAct tent embassy, then when we get forcefully removed, sue for discrimination. Our ancestors founded ACT in 1911 and we should have the right to represent them by camping wherever we like, perhaps on Kerehona’s front lawn.

No it isn’t. It is a misconception that Embassies are the soverign territory of the sending state. Not true. Actually there is a good QI episode where they discuss that…can’t remember which one. Vienna Convention (etc etc) rules state something along the lines of the receiving states’ police and other services cannot enter without approval from the sending state. Sometimes that request could take a long time to be transmitted if it was a dictator fleeing from an angry mob to a friendly embassy! 🙂 But other times the Embassy staff could say to the police “come on in and remove these tent-placing dickheads immediately”.

Either we’re all allowed to camp there, or no one is.

Couldn’t agree more. Imagine my outrage when I was told I was not allowed to sleep at the American Embassy, I mean if foreigners are allowed to sleep in the palatial building why, as a ‘Troo Aussie’ TM, aren’t I. Bloody unAustralian it is.

The stupidity in your post made it hard to understand your point. So I gave up trying.

If you couldn’t understand the point, I have given you too much credit in the past.

CSRI, if you really need to be your usual hilarious self, make sure the facetiousness doesn’t mask any point you’d like to make.

Or just read this.

There are three or four cars parked there that never get tickets. Might start parking there for work myself!

Sure they do Chewy. You just have to negotiate and have some back bone. Your arguing reverse privilege/######. Lame.

Your argument seems persuasive. Thanks for convincing me.

BTW, does reverse privilege have something to do with reverse vampires?

+1 – Pitch your tent at the base of Uluru and see how long you last!

It’ll be interesting to find out if the people who were mugged were tourists or just walking by, or involved in some way with the squatters. There’s been reports of threatening behaviour by the squatters there over the years. How I wish the government would stop this bending over backwards crap and kick them out. The whole thing is so stupid.

The Police.

Haven’t you been watching the Occupy protests?

The majority of the population don’t get to expropriate public land.

Whats stopping you, off you go, take your tent. Wouldn’t want you to feel left out.

Soooooooooooooo predictable.

Do they even get any official visits there?

…did they ever?

If not, bulldoze it.

Surely it is time to clear the area and ban camping there (for all people regardless of their race).
