A 55-year-old Chifley man, who is alleged to have stolen a mobile phone last weekend (Saturday, August 24), was identified with the assistance of a mobile phone application.

About 7pm on Saturday, the owner parked his car in the car park located off London Circuit near the Magistrates Court. When he returned a short time later he saw his car had been broken into and a number of items stolen, including a mobile phone.

The mobile phone contains an application that discreetly takes a photograph when a user puts in the wrong access passcode on the phone three times in a row. The photograph is automatically sent to the owner’s email account.

The owner reported the incident to police and later forwarded on the photograph.

Investigations by police led them to the 55-year-old man in his Chifley home. He was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House where he was later bailed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday September 5.

He has been charged with property damage and minor theft.

And no comments on the dick leaving their gear in the car?

I know nowadays it’s common to say ‘it’s ok it’s insured’ instead of taking some responisbility for ‘your’ items.

Am I missing the sarcasm?

Maybe where it says ‘when he returned a short time later’ means he realised he accidentally left his phone in the car; maybe it slipped out of his pocket.

I think locking your car is taking responsibility for your items.

So you should remove everything from your car before leaving it?

I get the whole “don’t leave valuables in sight” thing, but you regularly hear of crims just randomly breaking into cars on the off chance that there will be $14 in change for civic parking in the console.

Fecking bastards broke into my car and stole my service log and owner’s manual. In previous vehicles I’ve owned, fecking bastards have broken in and tried to prise out the analog clock of a ’77 Toyota. I don’t care for white trash junkies.

Cerberus for Android does this, it also can track by GPS, delete all contents on the phone, display a message, play a loud alarm tone and more. Possibly it wasn’t just the photo of the guy.

I’m not really surprised about this. Chifley is the Charnwood of Woden. You only have to drive up Macfarland Cres from Eggleston Cres to see this. The houses on the Chifley side are all ramshackle and dishevelled with overgrown grass. One house has had an old building crane in the front yard for over 30 years and it is occasionally joined by various derelict cars. As soon as you drive over the hill into Pearce the houses are all neat, well maintained and classy looking. I’m not surprised to hear that this mobile phone thief lives in Chifley.

With thieves increasingly getting caught as technology improves it’s increasingly becoming an old man’s game.

Credit card fraud is where the kids are at!

Far more lucrative for the young buggers who have the smarts.

55? bit old to be playing petty thief isnt it?

Well, given that the only information you get is a photo of the thief, and following on from that the Police were able to head straight to his home, I’m guessing he was ‘known to Police’ already. Assuming that it was the photo that led to him being identified that is.

Not sure how useful this would be if your thief was someone you didn’t already know, or the Police didn’t immediately recognise.

That app sounds intriguing. Almost makes me think it would be worth the bother of having a passcode on my phone.

AirDroid claims to do the “take a photo when someone puts in the wrong unlock code” trick.

Do we know what the app was? Would be handy to have installed.
