The Greens Amanda Bresnan is calling for leadership following the alarming Challenging Racism report results this morning:
“Rather than promoting understanding, politicians have instead recently tabled an anti-Muslim petition, made insensitive remarks about refugees attending the funeral of people killed near Christmas Island and insulted traditional Islamic Halal food preparation.
“The use of asylum seekers and refugees, many of whom are Muslim, as political footballs by both major parties has continued over a number of elections, with misleading and false depictions of ‘queue jumpers’ and ‘illegal immigrants’.
“Politicians should instead be clearly explaining to Australians the reality; that refugees who arrive in Australia by boat are usually coming from desperate situations in countries where they can’t apply for a visa or other documentation to leave.
More worryingly she wants the Multicultural festival to focus more on religion, which it’s hard to imagine the crowds would be thrilled about.
Also, once again, the kids are going to cop it, presumably because they can’t vote:
“The Greens want the Government to review grass roots projects such as the Interfaith and Intercultural Understanding in School Settings project that was piloted in NSW to further improve understanding,” Ms Bresnan said today.

Why? Until they start appearing in the media as being desirous of killing ‘skippies’ and not wanting to be a part of Australian culture or as people running away from crime scenes appearing to be of ‘Jewish decent’ or being over-represented in crime statistics, especially in violent crime, then I see no need for anyone to look at the jews….it’s not like they don’t have a bucket load of experience in laying low, is it!

Given this track of thought…out of curiousity, has Australia ever had a “discussion” about the “dangerous enclaves” of Jewish people?

What are you talking about? The next page on that RSPCA link after “What is halal slaughter?” is “What is kosher slaughter?”, the page is very similar and both methods are criticised. Same with just about every other anti-animal cruelty web site I’ve seen. You hear more about people wanting halal to be available rather than kosher though, which could be why it gets more attention (if it does).
I’ve heard the claim it’s more humane several times but for some reason those studies seem to be done by religious people. The vast majority of animal organisations worldwide disagree.
Amazing how the “Ubber-fmeinist” greens lady can support the anti-feminist Islam.

It’s interesting that the RSPC’s information fails to mention that a. Halal slaughter is virtually identical to Kosher slaughter (where is their negatively biased report on that?) and b. that studies have shown http://www.mustaqim.co.uk/halalstudy.htm that Halal slaughter is less cruel than conventional captive bolt slaughter.
Amazing how the “Ubber-fmeinist” greens lady can support the anti-feminist Islam.
tasty though
Here’s the RSPCA’s information on Halal slaughtering. I wonder if she actually knows what is involved in the practice.

Are you trying to start a fight? I doubt it’s just Catholic schools that teach that, and possibly not all of them do. I know several Anglican schools do too.
Disappointed by the halal comment – who insulted it? I’m not sure what she’s referring to but there seems to be significant evidence that it’s crueller than other forms of slaughter, and as a result I’m opposed to it. I don’t think there should be religious exceptions for things like that.
Interestingly, it’s the catholic schools that already teach about the different faiths as part of their RE.
I think Amanda’s rather missed the point of the multicultural festival – its success is (at least partly) due to the exclusion of more contentious points of difference between cultures.
Nonetheless, I look forward to the announcement of the 2012 Multifaith Festival. I’d go.
Amanda, should be promoting a vegan life style.
Amanda these a national issues, stay in your box and put more timeworking on what you were elected worry about…THE ACT!
