ACT Policing Criminal Investigation detectives have seized approximately half a kilo of cannabis following the execution of a search warrant on an Amaroo address yesterday (19 December).

During the warrant, detectives also seized a vehicle, clothing and a mobile phone. The cannabis seized has a potential street value of $6,250.

Following the search warrant, a 25 year-old man was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House. He will be charged with drug trafficking and possession offences and will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

ACT Policing urge anyone who suspects illegal activity in their area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via their website. www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Did anyone hear the AtlasAir B747 carrying global party celebrites Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Fox take off for Las Vegas from Canberra airport at about 3.00am yesterday morning?

WTF?

Earlier in the year an AFP chopper flew endless circles over Canberra at night for several weeks which featured on RA. Maybe I’m imagining things, but there seems to have been an increased number of drug busts in Canberra after that.

I wonder if they were using IR cameras to look for unusual heat signatures indicating grow houses, unusual activity around houses at night indicating dealer action etc.

You are on the money – the police have gathered massive amounts of intelligence using the methods you have described.
I note DrKoresh is complaining about the police working with the helicopters in the middle of the night. I found that they were orbiting at a very high level and were difficult to hear (for the benefit of the crims obviously).

Whatever they’re doing I wish they wouldn’t do it in the middle of the lumping night.

I dated a young lady who worked for the CSIRO many years ago, who told me that there were ways to scan for chemical concentrations using satellites, and soon after there were many large-scale busts of Marijuana plantations in sometimes fairly remote areas. This is the closest thing I could find in a brief search- http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Satellite_sniffs_out_chemical_traces_of_atmospheric_pollution
I suppose with the smaller sized set ups in the suburbs, the FLIR application would be more effective. Pretty cool science anyway.

Why oh why are Police resources wasted chasing this stuff when they should be chasing the real criminals?? Like bad parkers and drivers in the right lane of dual carriageways?

Shouldnt every copper in Canberra all be working on the one crime that I decide is real and ignoring all others?

Yeah, nice work beating down that straw-man there, guy, but I don’t think that’s what anybody here said. Maybe you should saddle-up that high-horse and take your vitriol elsewhere.

Yes your right. Not one complaint about police resources in this thread. Vitriol? Not really. Might want to check hyperbole when googling definitions and fancy words to use. Or else maybe lighten up a little. If someone doesnt agree with your pet peeve it doesnt make it a high horse just a different opinion.

What a valuable use of police resources. Honestly, the sooner a serious discussion about prohibition starts, the better. But you could probably squeeze close to six grand out the much ganja, if you sold it in 50’s at a time.

Oh good. I’ll be able to sleep well knowing this crime syndicate has been crushed.

What a waste of time and resources.

That’s a pretty extreme undervaluation from the Poh Lease. I though they valued half a kilo at about 4 trillion, street value.

It isn’t really that inflated. $350 per ounce for the top-shelf smoko is about right for a really tight dealer. Here we have 18oz @ $350 = $6300. I doubt anyone with a pound would be paying that kind of money though. Sounds like ACT Policing need to find themselves a better dealer.

If you pronounce the “Poh” in Police then chances are they are already after you.

if he had half a kilo -thats just a bit over a pound.. so it would have cost him about 2 and a half to 3 grand- depending on your source of product that is 🙂

I think he was just saying that usually the “street value” they quote is some massive number and in this case it’s 6 grand, which isn’t much really in the scheme of things.

I don’t really buy a lot of cannabis. How much is it actually worth, then?
