With the good government of the Australian Capital Territory completely under control the Chiefly Jon Stanhope’s thoughts turn to distant Palestine.

Members of the ACT Legislative Assembly have been invited to a special briefing by the head of the Palestinian delegation to Australia, as the first step towards the possible establishment of a local branch of the Parliamentary Friends of Palestine.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the offer of a briefing had been made last month by the Head of the General Delegation of Palestine to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, Mr Izzat Abdulhadi.

Mr Abdulhadi had offered to brief interested ACT MLAs on the latest political and social developments in Palestine and the status of Palestine’s pursuit of a two-state solution in the Middle East.

He had also expressed interest in establishing a local version of the Parliamentary Friends of Palestine, which exists at the Commonwealth level and which is also being established in some State jurisdictions.

Is this sort of global outreach the sort of thing you want your MLAs undertaking?

One minute our MLA’s are trying to tell us the poor dears are over worked and they need more MLA’s elected to spread their workload and then they are telling us they are invited to take a few hours off to listen to this wanker. Any MLA signing up for this loses my vote immediately, concentrate on local issues guys.

Makes sense. The only real support Stanhope has left is the rusted on left, so throwing them a few ideological cues won’t cost him anything.

(Does he REALLY have serious ambassadorial ambitions?)

I would prefer that these people keep their noses out of affairs that affect the rest of the planet.

They simply are not qualified – remember that to get their job, they won a popularity contest, and therefore should be considered as unskilled workers, not unlike Miss America.

I reckon there’s some useful things Miss America could do for me that Stanhope couldn’t…

Er….

Its just another lobby/interest group… but Stanhope shaking hands with the Palestinian Authroity is going to piss of a few people (at the very least it should cause some fireworks and make his life harder, like he has done for many residents of the ACT)
