Chief Minister Gallagher has announced that the days of paying through the nose to dispose of a television are at an end.

From the middle of next month, DHL Supply Chain (Australia) Pty Ltd will provide a free, ongoing recycling service for households and small businesses across the ACT to dispose of televisions, computers, and computer products such as printers, keyboards, mice and hard drives. The scheme does not cover other electronic waste, such as mobile phones which are already covered by the voluntary recycling scheme MobileMuster.

The Chief Minister said the implementation of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme was an example of Canberra continuing to lead the way in recycling and waste management.

“The new scheme gives Canberrans greater choice for recycling when disposing of their televisions, computers and computer products, while helping our recycling industry to grow,” she said.

“We also expect to see the free scheme have a major impact on illegal dumping in the ACT.”

The DHL Supply Chain services will begin on 15 May 2012 and will operate from the Mugga Lane and Mitchell Transfer Stations, which are open from 7.30am to 5pm, seven days a week.

Anyone know where to buy a 34cm CRT TV?

I’ve got an amiga and a c64 I play with, the CRT i’ve got is somewhat impractical to sit on my desk.

Ask for one on freecycle. Preferably before this recycling scheme starts.

I’ve got one you could have – it hasn’t been soiled by such unnecessaries as AV inputs

Sadly if you have to take it out there, it won’t stop kerb dumping.

Surely all the bottom-feeding bogans have their massive plasmas by now.

I seriously think it’s time to stop using the big screen tv as a bogan/baby bonus status symbol. Go to a tv store and have a look around. You can’t buy anything else anymore and you can pick one up for around $700.

i would just wait at the mitchel resource centre until one turns up!

Woohoo – I’ve got 3 old PCs, 2 CRTs and a pile of other e-waste in my garage just waiting for this to start!

Yay!!! I won’t be rushing to the tip until it quietens down. Just remember – it’s free forever – so don’t hurry and get caught up in the traffice jams.

Great news! I’d been waiting for this and had built up a bit of a collection – I can finally claim my floor space back!

Awesome. About time.

“The Chief Minister said the implementation of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme was an example of Canberra continuing to lead the way in recycling and waste management.”

Hmmm, I wouldn’t go patting themselves on the back about ‘leading the way’ in waste mgt just yet. I think we need green waste bins and biannual hard waste removal (like almost every other council-led area of Aus now has) before we can even break even.

I suppose though, as it is an election year, perhaps if we nag for these things now, they may happen!

Me thinks that the first few weeks of this are going to be huge!

I get the impression that Canberra garages a full of old CRT TV’s and desktops.

I reckon they will get enough to bury Queanbeyan Pompeii style

Excellent news! I’m sat in a room with four dead computers, a CRT and a scanner, It’ll be a blessing to get rid of the lot.

At least the Dirty Lazy Scum won’t be able to whine about how they have no money left after buying their new 60 inch flatscreen to dispose of their old screen and so are forced to dump it.

Bugger, paid $25 on Sunday to tip a CRT

Well, this is a start. Let’s hope the ‘recycling’ doesn’t mean the waste is shipped off to some developing (or developed: http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2010/s3048959.htm ) nation for children to melt the toxic plastics and metals down for 5c a day.

Good stuff. I’ll be doing a bit of a clean-up, by the looks. Hope they have the shipping containers ready.
